What is the right tool to cut this PVC pipe?

You folks that are handy with landscaping and ditch digging may be able to help me here.

This big pipe is 4 inch fairly thin-walled yard drain pipe. I am re-routing it. I need to cut out a section of it, and then I will no longer use the section that is going off to the right. I will connect a 45 degree elbow on the section going off to the left and lay new pipe in my new empty trench.

What is a good thing to cut that big pipe with? It is in a somewhat tight spot and I need to leave the smaller sprinkler pipes undamaged. I would normally just use a hacksaw, but that is only an option if the pipe were much more accessible.

It does not look like you have room for that without a lot more work and digging.

Long blade on a Sawzall or Dewalt cordless (easier imho) cut from the building out and use a chunk of plywood or whatever to protect the 1" irrigation lines.

I always use a sawzall..like said, protect the small pipes and you'll be fine

Variable speed sawzall with a fine tooth metal cutting blade. Plus as already mentioned, something to protect the smaller lines. Assuming the small ones are plastic water lines, not the worst oops if you cut one. Couplers are low cost.

That is pretty cool trick with string. A comment on that video suggests to dip the string in primer to make it even quicker. Thanks for these ideas. I will have to go shopping. Hmm, an excuse to buy a sawzall, sounds splendid. For me it would have to be corded or air, no battery stuff for me beyond flashlights and one extremely rare plug-in screwdriver.

I'd use a Sawzall and common sense protection of other pipes. The string method is neat, but that wasn't a good cut for coupling, way out of square

I have used this on pvc and it worked great.

funny story (depending on your gag reflex). we bought a property for the 30x50 storage building but the city wouldnt let me tear down the house so we had to rehab it (another story). the PO fancied himself a remodeler and moved the sink from the back wall to an island. I guess they thought water drains worked on the principle of pressure, because where it came out of the floor was lower than the sewer main 12 feet away, and to make it worse there was a dishwasher and a garbage disposal hooked at the sink, so lots of food in the line.

some incredibly lucky fool (me) got to raise the line and change the angle to drain.. access in the floor joists was tight and so i used the abrasive string shown.


the line was still full of water (and food scraps) and had sat for 3 years withe the house empty. I cant forget the smell. when my mother in law moved in she would not stop mentioning the smell. it eventually faded but good. lord.

I worked on a horse ranch for a number of years and this is how I repaired the sprinkler lines in the pastures after the horses would play and bite the sprinkler heads. We finally would move them while we watered, but I would cut the lines with the string and repair. We tried to keep the holes in the pasture as small as we could before we tamped them back down. Braided mason line works the best

This would work also . I got one a few years ago for Father’s Day and I’m surprised how much I use it . They make corded versions too

I ended up getting a wire saw at Lowes, and used a close-quarters hacksaw to start the cut.

Answer me This

How can you dig a trench/ditch ,
Then put a pipe in it That was not there before.
Save the Dirt that came out of it.

Then you will need More Fill dirt to make it level again.
