Here's a '67 MY lock hub. Unrestored. From a '67 K/10 Suburban 3-Door.

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

All Spicer hubs are in this discussion that was not begun by you, and all information is pertinent.

The vehicle pictures, all along, prove nothing to me. Even unrestored, because that doesn't mean un-serviced. The copyright '67 service manual finally proved to me the plastic hubs predated '70 on some 1/2t K-models. The all metals were also used (used up?) through '69 on trucks.

I believe now that all these lockout hubs interchange, even when listed for specific years and models, within a series

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

Interesting to note the '69 MY Blazers have a ''B'' preface to their VINs. My own '71 Jimmy -- while a St Louis truck, and a GMC -- does not.
I never knew that in 51 years of driving my C/10 Stepside...
The 1971 Jimmy K/1500 Does have the Blue hubs. Somewhat faded. [Mostly mud-spattered.]

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

This thread has taught me a few things, I appreciate the effort and actual literature posted. I still have never seen a 1/2 ton in person before 70 that had red dials, I’ve honestly only seen 2-3 sets of real GM style red dials in person, but all of them were on 70’s. That said it sure does seem possible they were around before then. I’ve enjoyed the new life this thread has received.

Though not 67-72, These are my personal all time favorite hubs though. Dana 60 bad assery! They may not be as pretty as the blue dial 3/4 ton 44 hubs, but they represent pure beef lol.

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

I like the Warn Premiums on the Dana 60s. They are a handsome set of hubs. If I had $250 on me yesterday at the swap meet I would have bought the set my friend was selling

I agree those are some nice looking hubs. Mine need to be refreshed. I’ll get to it one of these days.

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

These pictures are from a GMC brochure for 1970 (printed 7-69), hubs on the Jimmy were blue and the pickup still has what appears to be the all metal hub lok hubs or maybe just drive flanges since lockouts were optional.

Thumbs up Re: 4wd spicer hub color

Thanks for the photos. My March 1970 produced Blazer has the blue. I've seen earlier 1970 K/5 K10 with red. Trying to pin down when the switch was made.

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

The '70 Blazer CST I owned had red knobs. But I have no idea what part of the year it was built. I have always seen either/or. I only have owned on '69 K/10 and it had the metal Spicers. I believe all K/20s had the metal and K/10s had either/or. I think the old style Spicers were used less that the plastic on '69 K/10s. I don't know about Blazers

I am searching hi and low for photographic evidence to support my statement that 3937068 is indeed the red plastic knob.
This popped up on Ebay, and proves that 3937068 is indeed the 1968-early 1970 red plastic Spicer 1/2 ton hub knob.

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

I have not seen a plastic hub knob used in 68. I think the red 1/2 ton knobs were 69 blazer and maybe early 70. The reds were used into 71 on some 3/4 tons.

If you go by the brochures it gets more confusing...Those show the metal HUB LOK dial used into 70 on 3/4 tons.
I have a jimmy brochure from 7-69 showing all blue hubs. I also have a gmc brochure from 9-69 showing all red. Keep in mind the jimmy was just coming out.
I don't see any red hubs in 70 in brochures, but a couple of 71 brochures had them???

The white shortbed above this appears to have 3/4 ton hubcaps on it.

Re: 4wd spicer hub color

A few pics. I know brochures are not always totally accurate.
I am thinking the metal lockouts were called the HUB LOK and the plastic were free wheeling? Just my theory...
Pic 2 is from the 69 blazer brochure but note the 4 wheel drive emblem is not in the correct location if that is the back of the fender.
Pic 4 is the 7-69 jimmy brochure.
Hard to tell in the pic, but that is a red hub in pic 5...
Who knows what is right or wrong...

The white shortbed has special 16" wheels on it, and therefore they take the larger caps?

The partsbooks indicate 1968 was the first year of the Dana Spicer lockout hubs that were used until model year 1980. I have also proven this with an excerpt from the 1968 factory service manual showcasing them, as well as several original 1968 trucks equipped with them. The cutoff from red knobs to blue knobs on the half tons/Blazers seems to be in the early March, 1970 timeframe. Red knobs on the 3/4 tons continued into the early 1971 model year, before being switched to blue.

The four wheel drive emblem used from 1968-70 was always located under the front marker lamp, and the engine callout emblem was located under the model emblem on the rearward of the front fender.
