Help with woodgrain matching

I have a build thread I am doing over in the 4x4 section here. It is a 72 Super Cheyenne K20 4x4 truck. The friend I am building for "Bestview" purchased an NOS aluminum woodgrain panel from DeadheadNM a few years back for this project. I finally got the glove box all stripped down and re-painted and set the woodgrain pane on top to see how it looks. Then I purchased a new woodgrain gauge bezel. They are not even close in woodgrain color or style.

So the question is, is there a 3M vinyl that others have used that will match closely to the glove box pattern? I have an accurate CAD file of the gauge bezel and I own a full-size CNC router machine that has a tangential cutter that I can cut the vinyl to the exact size and install. I also have to recover the woodgrain door panel inserts to match.

Any help on this is really appreciated.

That is a very real problem when restoring a super. I would love to find a source for accurate woodgrain vinyl. I think there is a real market for it too

I had the same issue when I ordered a new aluminum applique. I personally prefer the woodgrain pattern as shown on your bezel versus the larger and lighter grain of the original pattern. So I ended up applying a new decal to my new applique. End result took me three decals to get it applied with minimal bubbles. If I did it again, I would probably take it to a sign shop to have them apply it. All I had was a heat gun to get the bubbles out, and the first trial ended up shrinking an area that I couldn't make right again. I found the first one at Holley.com and the subsequent ones at classicparts.com. They are the same part, just a little cheaper at classicparts. These are the oversized ones for no trim panel, and that gives a little extra meat on the edges for trimming.

With that said, I do recall seeing a part number in a past search for the original vinyl that was close. It will take a little digging, but there was one somewhere in these forums.

just have to say the whole interior dash color, wood grain , seats and rug door panels combination is a spectacular combo IMHO

those variations and interesting. The darker brown is very much what the 1970s were about, and what I had in my '72 Sierra Grande (OEM). I prefer those with more orange color tone. This makes one think that the difference might have been which plant the truck was built at that determined the color tone...however the grain is the same. hum

This is a interesting thread, obviously different companies did these for the different plants not just one and different people ran the machine at different shifts, they weren’t trying to make museum trucks as we are today

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the top one doesn't have holes for the emblem.

To clarify, the piece shown above isn’t NOS GM it is a NORS if you will from Golden State Pickup parts and was sold as such. I was going to use this but happened upon a GM piece. I’ll dig for a photo of the NOS piece that I’ve since installed.

EDIT: Added photos. The top photo shows the NOS GM piece against the Golden State piece, which has pre-punched holes for the emblem. I’ve got NORS Golden State 1) woodgrain 72 door inserts on my K20 and 2) tailgate band on the Blazer. These were US made pieces.

The bottom photo is a NOS cluster bezel I recently added to the K20.

If anyone is interested in the Cheyenne Superman glove box door (black) and woodgrain bezel I removed from the K20 I can post these up to the parts board.
