Help Identifying Rear Axle and transmission

Hi guys,

Could you please help with identifying the rear axle in my truck? It's a 69 C-20. I grabbed the best pic I could without it being on the lift. If this is not enough, just tell me what to look for and I'm happy to get whatever's needed. I'm trying to figure out how much lubricant is needed for a change, and it would be good to know this anyway.

I also need a little help identifying the transmission that's installed. From the service manual, it looks like there were three different 3-speeds - Warner, Muncie and Saginaw. Is there an easy way to tell one from the other?

Thank you. Yes sir, it is a 3 on the tree. Am I correct in seeing that it's rated for 5,200 lb?

Look at the side cover and compare it to the chart. Not sure on the rating....

Okay - so it looks like I have a Saginaw 3 speed. The capacity chart shows that the 3-speeds take 1.75 pints unless they are "HD", in which case they take 3. pints. Does anyone know which transmissions are considered HD?

Also, the bushings on the linkage going into the transmission are 100% shot. Is there a recommended source for those? Anything else I should refresh in the linkage while I'm at it? It is super sloppy, but shifts smoothly still.

And one additional thing - there is what appears to be a leak at the speedo connection. Is this easily remedied? Not sure how exactly that would seal - perhaps I need a new cable?

I believe that the HD three on the tree is the Muncie. For my '70 C10 with a 350, the HD Muncie three was standard.

The Muncie also has a drain bolt at the front driver side near the bellhousing (at least mine does). The Saginaw does not, supposedly one can remove the lowest tailhousing bolt as the drain for it.

There is an "O" ring on the body of the "bullet". Just unscrew the bolt, pull the bullet out and replace the "O" ring. I can't remember if ther is an "O" ring inside were the shaft of the gear fits in or not maybe someone else will chime in on that. You don't have to unscrew the cable. When you screw the bolt back in go easy with it or you might twist it off....

I'll look closer at that in the morning. When I googled the casting numbers, I was getting hits back on Saginaw, and the cover seemed to match that one on the diagram above, but I could certainly be mistaken. My truck only has a 307, so perhaps that would change things?

For the 307 it should be the saginaw unless noted on the SPID from the factory.
