Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Installed a set of NOS door latches, and new metalized tape on the frame around the wood grain. I had originally installed the tape with the panels off, but noticed I missed part of the top ledge on one side, so fixed it with the panel on, which was actually easier. I used 1/2" wide for the top and bottom frame, and 3/8" for the sides. Sides are easier to center, so 3/8" is perfect - just happened to have both sizes.

With new latches and warm weather, the doors finally close nicely with new weatherstrip.

I developed an assembly information kit for restoring my truck from nuts and bolts. It's written in Assy. order, short & simple, packed with all OEM hardware ID; castings; part ID; 100s of part numbers; wiring simple - Resource, and trivial too.

Much info. applies to all 67-72 GM, A/C vehicles, esp. trucks W/O saying. Full search ability, including to 700+ images of illus., parts, charts, Assy., points of interest, cab, bed, & front clip cart plans- Specials and cores were serviced out and R excluded e.g. front/rear glass, body/paint, engine core, rebuilt hinges, steering box, trans, etc.

The project was in-line with long former professions developing process, policy, specs, demo, written for novices, admin., policy, engineers, development, systems & test - Public & govt 2, gross. Sell soft copy cheaply, PM if interested.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Took the 68 Stepside to my mom’s house drove mostly two lane highways around 55-60 mph . The round trip was 125 miles and I used 6.6 gallons of gas . 18.939 miles per gallon I’m just calling it 19 , not bad for a 250 with a sm465 I was under the impression it was a 4.57 rear but I changed out the gear oil and it’s a 4.11 . But still pretty impressive milage from a brick

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

.

I made it sit all alone inside the ropes at the Good Guys Spring Nationals Rod and Custom show today at TMS while I made my way through a small percentage of the PATE swap meet just outside the speedway in the parking lot.

Tomorrow I'll be there again with my truck and will enjoy the car show festivities with friends.

Come by and say hello if you find yourself at the show.

Finished putting my truck back together after the paint job. Added a slider, cargo light and three point seat belts. Can't decide if to add the headache rack or not. Thoughts?

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Racks are good and if you're in jeopardy of a steel pipe or long 2 x 4 board sliding forward and breaking your rear window, then use the rack. If you're not using the truck to make a living doing these crafts, then a Headache Rack is pretentious, excess weight, and aerodynamic drag.
But it's your truck.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I think i finally solved my leaking TH350. Swapped out the shift shaft as the original one had significant wear on it. There is a definite ridge around the seal area not quite visible in the picture. The rebuild shop didn't catch it, but they were nice enough to give me a used one. Weirdly they both have a gouge in the same spot, but otherwise shes good.

I should try this. I put in a new seal years ago and it still leaks. It's the original shaft. I went to a local trans shop to see about getting it fixed, and they want $167.50 minimum for any work. Fortunately, he had a Mercedes something or other that was occupying the heavy hoist. I can buy a new shaft and seal for a bit less than that. I guess I'll have to do it myself. #CHEAPSOB Except I have a bit of trouble getting up and down, what with uncle Arthur visiting all my joints.

BoT, I drove my truck to a local car show but it started raining and the show fizzled. Member @Richard and I had a burger and chatted for awhile out of the weather.

You might try one of these seals. It seals at 2 different places. I've never tried one but kept the post for future reference.

Good luck, Rg

It did occur to me that the seal wore one section of the shaft, but I never thought about a seal like this. Thanks for mentioning it! I'll check it out.

ETA: Looked at that thread. The seals are certainly cheap enough, but I don't need 5. Still worth the money. I'll see if they work on a 400 THM.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I attempted this repair 3 or 4 times. The shaft appeared in perfect shape and would leak a little or even a lot after each attempt. I think I was nicking the seal on the machined lip. Replaced shaft and seal in a somewhat reverse manner and it's been leak free almost 2 years. Now that I post about it, there will be a pubble on the floor in the morning. Just like I bragged about my 53 year old driver window regulator working so well last week. Guess what's in the mail for replacement this week.

I should try to catch up with you guys at a car show sometime. It's been a long time since I've been to car shows.

Installed the new heater control on my 68 stepper and I bought 2 sets of Trico Classic wipers. They were $10 each guy gave me the 4 for $35 at the Rhinebeck or as we call it the Rainbeck show as it rains every year ,

I bet they hold their shape better than the black plastic ones.

Here in AZ the sun kills the rubber before they're a year old, anyway.

Finally installed chrome tailgate handle cover. Met Eric (Chevyland) at C10 Intervention Woodland 2024 and he informed me that my truck should have it being it's Sierra Grande. He sent it within a week of the show and I just got around to installing it. Thank You Eric

They make the complete blade but no refills . Even though the blade can come off just like the originals makes no sense
