Dad got real quiet and I said "what's wrong?".

"Man" he said "I sure did not like those when they first came out!"

years ago I started a thread on PY asking what folks there thought of 55-57 Chevy's compared to same years of Pontiacs. The answers were overwhelmingly in favor of Pontiacs of those years.

That surprised me. I guess if you grew up around Pontiacs and have been around them more that Chevrolets...and maybe are close to a Pontiac dealer, plus other Pontiac connections, A Pontiac of those years would be more appealing to you...

I grew up in a one horse town in Eastern Iowa. We had one Dodge dealer and one Chevrolet dealer. My Dad ws, and IS a Chevy guy!!! 94 years old this past April 18th. He still drives his 2024 pickup and 2023 Suburban, where ever. He drives better than I do...LOL

The answer for me on the 55-57's was undoubtedly the Chevrolets. To me it's still a hand down deal. (it's still a free country!!!) I asked the same question to y 2 pontiac fellow enthusiasts, they agreed with me..........

IIRC those were built along the lines of the 55 Chevy, so same chassis, engines, etc.

They were freaks. Chevy engine, Chrysler Torqueflite transmissions. Smart design features, though. Tons of lube points. They even had grease Zerks for the rear wheel bearings

You triggered a memory recall, my 46 CJ2A Jeep has grease zerks in the rear wheel bearings.

When I was in high school those Checkers were a staple at just about every Taxi Cab business around, also the 4 door Plymouth Satellite was very common.
We called the Plymouth Road Runners 2 door taxi cabs just rib the owner.

I worked at the Enco station at the corner of Sherman Way and Van Nuys Blvd in '72. The LAPD had those 4 door satellites; they had 383 engines in them. They used to head west on Sherman Way at high acceleration rates. One of my friends had a '62 Grand Prix with a 389, tri-power and a 4-speed. He was driving stupid (typical) on Van Nuys Blvd, and after a short race took a side street. Ducking off VNB after a stoplight to stoplight race was common, to avoid the big tickets. He saw a vehicle approaching rapidly from behind and figured it was another race, and punched it. Wrong, it was the LAPD. Driving 80 MPH in a 25. He only got a ticket for 40. One lucky day for him and anyone who might have been walking around the neighborhood.

Saw this good looking Ford today. I like the paint, stance, wheels and caps. A breath of fresh air in a sea of soulless plastic cars.
