Re: Bought a pile from a cow pasture

Nice truck with interesting options, I would restore that. I would put a little Armor-All on the dash before it gets any worse.

I agree. Had a 307 in my 69 C10 when I bought it used. Just the addition of a small 4-bbl and dual exhaust with generic turbo mufflers made a huge difference in power.

I sometimes wish I would have kept it instead of swapping in a 350. I would have used better heads and slightly larger cam than stock.

Mine has body and belt molding, it’s a factory Cheyenne. Not sure if that makes a difference.

My 69 came with a 307 (which was a warranty replacement engine which should have told you something) and it was a complete dog. Not even adding a 4-bbl helped. Now, the sb400 I built to replace it did wonders for the truck and its towing ability.

Our experiences with 307s are certainly different!

The 307's heads weren't great, but still better than later 305 smog era heads, and compression was "only" 9:1 or so. Also, a 307 was essentially a stroked 283, which would have been pretty cool prior to the release of the 327 in 1962. I don't know why yours was a dog. Carburetion? Ignition timing? Stock 2" (or maybe even 1-7/8") single exhaust?

BTW, warranty replacement engines weren't all that uncommon back then, and not just 307s. Heck, even some later model Corvettes have had their LS engines replaced under warranty.

Re: Bought a pile from a cow pasture

That right there isn't a pile, that's a Cowboy Cadillac! Between the full wheel covers, the upper and lower trim, the cab lights and the bumper guards that is a good looking truck. The 307 is a great little engine, I have one in my 1970 3/4 ton that lacks power but just keeps running. And nothing reminds you of an old truck like a 3 on the tree! Whatever you decide to do please let this thread know

Manufacturing consistency was not a strong point in that era. The Flint produced TBC code 350 in my 1970 Blazer with 93k miles runs excellent, and has never been opened up, with the exception of valve covers and distributor.

V0223TBC

Now the McKinnon produced TBC code 350 in my Grandfather's 1970 K20 was a problem riddled engine it's entire existence.

K1111TBC per the Protect-o-plate.

Hey, I did that to build a 327 for a 55 Chevy sedan. The crank I used was cast, but Chevy also used some forged ones. Maybe in trucks???

Ah, the poor unloved 307.

I guess I never expected too much out of the base V-8s, but didn't hate them. Back in the 80s I even had a used 78 Monte Carlo with a 305 that I thought was pretty decent. Now I do remember rental cars like the Malibu with the 267 V-8 which was a real dog.

On another note, I'm surprised to hear that having both body and belt moldings was rare in 69, but never really thought about it. My 69 C10 Custom has both. I personally think it's a bit much, though.

I received the information and it costs roughly $105 USD, which may be more than the truck is worth!! I'll let this go for now.

They have really raised their rates. It only makes sense if this had the pedigree of a high dollar rare Chevelle or Camaro.

Re: Bought a pile from a cow pasture

Brought it home Saturday. Thankfully all four wheels rolled. The clutch was stuck to the flywheel briefly, but broke loose. She's rougher that a night in jail and the field nice have not been kind to her, but I like it. Also the tailgate and hood are shot, so I'll post a WTB for those. I'll get it cleaned up a bit and post some more pics.

You mean for a 72? Or in general? I don't know nearly as much about these trucks as most in here, but my 70 has upper and lower molding, and from the factory.

I guess "belt AND suspenders" is a more common fashion statement than I thought!
