Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Did a search but most of the results were for second gen. Here is the breakdown, I have a 64 fleet side with a 283/th350. I bought some Headman
longtube headers back in April and I want to install them. The problem is my 283 has the alternator mounting points on the exhaust manifold (drivers side) and the OEM curved adjustment bracket. From what I can tell when I go to install the additional Headman brackets that replace the exhaust manifold alternator mounting point it looks like it will be about an inch over more. Originally I figured a longer belt might be in order but I am wondering if I go that route it looks like I will have no more adjustment on the top bracket. Those Headman header brackets appear to move the alternator over an inch or so. Is this correct? I haven't tore anything down but was sort of mocking the bracket location up and noticed the difference. This got me to thinking about an alternative, I used to have a 74 Nova with a 350 and thought maybe I should look for that style of bracket and move the mounting location of the alternator to the passenger side. Am I opening a can of worms if I go that route? Am I over thinking this or once I tear into it will the Headman brackets line everything up in the OEM exhuast mounting point locations? I just don't want to cut my exhaust and then have the truck down while I search for a fix. Thanks in advance, Mark |

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Post a pic of your brackets.
Swapping to passenger side needs different brackets, pulleys and a long water pump. |

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Here are a few pictures...the large square slot on top actually faces down. I just don't have anything to hold it up. The bolts from the headers/exhaust manifold would go through the round holes and into the head. That large square is to clear the number 1 cylinder header tube. I just flipped it so that it would stand on it's own. The other bracket is for the lower alternator mounting bolt.

Yup, it moves a bit outboard.
The top curved bracket should work. Do you got a pic of where it attaches to the block? |

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Kind of hard to squeeze in there to get a decent pic with everything mounted. I can try later on today. And my curved bracket is almost to the end of the slot. If I add the header brackets it definitely will move it over and there will be no more adjustment left in the bracket.

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Have you looked into different mounts.
Brackets are available to mount the alternator down where a ps box would sit. https://alangrovecomponents.com/Catalog.htm |

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
I've found that once you extend the top bracket past a certain point the alternator passes its fulcrum and belt slacks up again.
Edit: if you do put the ramshorns back on you could port match them first with a Dremmel. I did that, even made a little thread when I did https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=838223 Last edited by AcampoDave; 07-29-2025 at 06:30 PM. |

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Are you running the original heads for the 283 engine? Or are you using a newer set with the bolt holes on the front side for brackets. If so you can do as I did with a head mounted bracket for alternator. I wanted a "factory" look with original short water pump.

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Yes, I'm runing a set of headers and the it doesn't interfere witht he PS set up. I went to this setup because I had the same issue you did finding a bracket. Also depends on what power steering brackets you are using. I found alternator bracket on Ebay.

Re: Headman Header Brackets - Alternator Location
Ok thanks, what did you search to find the bracket? Been looking and can’t find anything shaped like that.
