My buddy next door built a garage 5 years ago. When he ordered the doors, I had him to order me one to replace the roll up door on my shop with an insulated door. He and I installed all of his doors, but last Friday, after 5 years, I finally just hired a guy to install mine.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I'm right there with you guys. While I CAN do many repairs, now days I just DON'T want to any more. Health reasons mainly. I just don't have the energy anymore. Our friends come to me to fix something on their car or house and I hate to tell them no. One widow lady friend of ours bought a new headlamp assembly for her 2024 Terain suv. She bought it off amazon. We saved her over $800 off the dealer quote to repair. Took a couple of hours. Last week I installed her new oven. She's got no one to do these things for her.
Getting up and down and sore hands and cut up skin, it's hard.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I hired a plumber 7 years ago to replace a section of corroded thru copper in the basement of our previous place and he used these new crimp on fittings with an O-ring inside and a machine to crimp it. Seems the new generation of plumbers aren't doing the old solder either. I asked how long the o-rings were going to last and he said the method was too new to know..... oh well, not my problem.
I do have several of the slip on fittings in this house now for water heater and softener and do look for telltale signs of any seepage occasionally. Garage doors... I replaced the original on our current home 4 years ago and last winter the damn thing froze down overnight and when I hit the open button, the top panel folded in before the ice let go. I bought a 16' piece of 1/8th inch 2x2 aluminum angle and put that on top to reinforce it but the panel really needs to be replaced, as it doesn't seal well at the top. Something that is on the "someday" list, but should be looked at ordering a new panel now before winter. I was shocked when I bought the angle piece, as that alone was $100 !!! I will install that on the new panel right from the git-go and hope this doesn't happen again. The door faces north and when we get a north wind with freezing rain, MAYBE we will stop to think about the door being frozen down next time.....naw, we'll never remember...

As far as the new door, I had the guy install a LiftMaster opener that goes on the wall next to the door and lifts using the spring/pulley rod rather than pulling on the top panel. I installed one myself on another door a few years ago and I'm very pleased with it. It was $375.00 a few years ago now it's $615.00!

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Today my brother and I mounted the rebuilt Hurricane 60 Jeep engine onto the engine run stand. I'm working towards firing it up for cam/lifter break-in and re-checking valve lash once it's warmed up.
Have owned this Jeep almost 40 years now, haven't driven at all for about 2 years now as it started to smoke a little. A complete makeover is in the works but seems like life gets in the way more often now as I get older. The grandson is going to do all the pretzel flexing on the project. |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Nice looking engine stand and new rebuild, but that tongue jack at the back just sitting on a board would make me very nervous. Maybe get a pair of large C-clamps and at least clamp the base to the frame...
![]() I just picked up a run stand from a friend to mount my 292 6 cylinder on to sell it. I had this built 10 years ago and have set it in 3 different vehicles, only to give up adapting them for the engine and sold the vehicles. .050 off the head for 9.2 compression, 488 lift cam, larger valves, of course, custom length push rods. Clifford intake and 390 Holley carb. Cylinders were still nearly perfect but severely glazed from the farm truck idling, so, my builder honed them and fitted new rings to the original pistons. Crank turned 10/10 and all new bearings. It has about an hour of run/break in time on it. |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Took the day off from everything yard, truck, house related. We went to the 118th birthday party for a local library. Had a great time listening to speakers, had some snacks, etc. They were also having a book sale. How can you go wrong with a $1.00 Chevrolet book!
What's cool is the oily fingerprints left inside. Person was setting the lash on the lifters.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I don't recall ever seeing that book. Who is the author/publisher and printing date ? Is it new enough to have V8 engines included...
![]() Borrowed a run stand to set up my 292 on. I am going to sell it and it should help to be able to see and hear it run. It isn't some old stock engine...

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
.
Today's my 17th day in a row....no alcohol. While not, IMO, a heavy drinker, I was drinking nightly....for like the last 20 years. According to the US Healthcare industry, on the other hand, anything over 2 drinks a day IS heavy drinking so YMMV and I may have been wrong! 2 things are certain now: 1) I was not/am not physically dependent. My physical withdrawal symptoms consisted of a mild headache the first two evenings then nothing after that. 2) I'm healthier now than I was 2 weeks ago both physically and mentally: going to sleep and waking earlier, sleeping deeper, feeling energized upon waking, hungry earlier in the day craving real food, thinking clearly, thinking positive...it is hard to put my finger on exactly what it is that I'm feeling now...but it's all good and a direct result of alcohol cessation (increased hydration, improved liver function, deeper restorative rest/sleep, lifted brain fog, better digestion/nutrition, etc...). Weight loss is real too. While I'm not really keeping track of it, I can see a change in the mirror. I was just gonna stop for a week as a test. After 7 days, I was like...OK, so far so good, let's go for 2 weeks. Now the goal is a month. -Kevin

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Spent some time today repairing a crack on our ceiling sheet rock. Had a quote last summer for $1500 to have a local contractor to do the work.
I watched some youtube videos so I thought what the heck I will give it a shot. Looks pretty good to me. Second layer repair paste goes on tomorrow. Does that mean I get to spend $1500 on hot rod parts? LOL. |
