Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration

Small update on a hard to find part. As I've noted on here before, I spent a lot of time looking for the correct two piece exhaust hanger that goes behind the muffler. By the 1970-71 parts book, a couple of numbers get you there:

3948683 Exhaust clamp upper
3820977 Exhaust clamp lower

I met a vendor at a show recently who was able to put me on the closest thing so far. He had an earlier version (upper only) and a superseding kit that had an extra bracket. The kit was in much better condition, the strap was the right thickness and ended up being the one I used. I removed the flash rust and the extra bracket and swapped out what I had on there for this two piece.

On the assembly line the tailpipe and muffler would have been welded together as one piece. There would be no need for the clamp you see pictured. Even though my muffler and tailpipe are NOS and correct numbers, they are service replacement examples.

The reason the factory put a two piece hanger on in that location is so you wouldn't have to fish a single piece clamp/hanger on from the tailpipe end all the way to this mounting position. You connected the muffler to the Y-pipe and throw this hanger right on where is goes.

First pic is the hanger I had been running on there. Then a couple of pics of the new parts I located, before and after clean up.
