Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration
Small update on a hard to find part. As I've noted on here before, I spent a lot of time looking for the correct two piece exhaust hanger that goes behind the muffler. By the 1970-71 parts book, a couple of numbers get you there:
3948683 Exhaust clamp upper 3820977 Exhaust clamp lower I met a vendor at a show recently who was able to put me on the closest thing so far. He had an earlier version (upper only) and a superseding kit that had an extra bracket. The kit was in much better condition, the strap was the right thickness and ended up being the one I used. I removed the flash rust and the extra bracket and swapped out what I had on there for this two piece. On the assembly line the tailpipe and muffler would have been welded together as one piece. There would be no need for the clamp you see pictured. Even though my muffler and tailpipe are NOS and correct numbers, they are service replacement examples. The reason the factory put a two piece hanger on in that location is so you wouldn't have to fish a single piece clamp/hanger on from the tailpipe end all the way to this mounting position. You connected the muffler to the Y-pipe and throw this hanger right on where is goes. First pic is the hanger I had been running on there. Then a couple of pics of the new parts I located, before and after clean up.

Here's the two piece hanger installed.

Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration
Not as big of a deal, but another part I had been looking for (for about the same amount of time) surfaced too. An NOS transfer case shift knob. Pretty pumped about it. Was never really satisfied with the rehab job I did on the nice original example that I was running.

Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration
A year ago now I was there and it was a chassis and engine. Now your driving it already. I hope I can make my way back next summer to get a ride in it. Your builds are top notch with good info and rate parts!

Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration
Thanks Pete. I learned it from watching you.

But I had to pull the seat and the mat and the hump once we got home. I don't understand fully what the cause was. Once I snapped 'em back in phase, it was probably fine. But I went through everything to be sure. No obvious issue. I went ahead and pulled the cover and replaced all the new cover components with newer cover components (just because) and put her back together. I guess a potential positive is that I had a small leak at the back up light switch that I didn't know I had because it had just pooled in the recess. I think that should be resolved. I've run it through the gears about fifty times in the meantime. But I probably did it a hundred times during the build. I couldn't walk by the chassis without shifting the gears. I've got everything back together except the mat and seat. I had some issues with color releasing from a few areas of the mat which was exacerbated by the removal. So Eric is going to prep and re-shoot that for me. But...I would love for you to come back and let's put some more miles on. One of the benefits of the bench being out is that it makes a really nice place to sit and stare at the truck. One of my favorite pastimes.

Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration
A few little updates. First...I totally whiffed on my parking brake cable spring. I can't believe you guys didn't call me on it! My cable cleared the driveshaft, (though very close) without it. We've started disassembling my brother's 70 which is very complete and original and I realized the omission. Picked up an NOS one and now the cable clears the shaft at a more reasonable distance.

Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration
Second...As you know, I wasn't super happy with the C10 Nationals experience. Though I had a blast hanging out with board members and friends.
I've got a buddy who is a big AACA guy and he encouraged me to show the truck at one of their events. There was a Winter Nationals show about 2hrs away from me this weekend, so I hauled her up there. An amazing variety of cool cars. My brother and mom drove up and my wife and daughter came. A really fun family weekend. We scored high enough for a first in our class. I'm new to how they dole out awards, but I am anxious to get my score sheet. They don't tell you what you score at the meet. I have to send away for it by mail...and I'm not sure they give you details on the deductions. You guys can probably tell me more than I know. I feel like they could ding me for having a battery topper instead of an actual Delco battery. I am also still running a Wix XP break-in oil filter. Those are the things I can think of. They may ding me for other things. But I got no questions from the judges...and I came loaded with docs to support the build.

Re: 1970 K20 Z62 Full Restoration
Thanks guys. It's been fun getting her out. I think I may leave the bench in there a little longer so I can keep showing it as original. At the show on Saturday I met a gentleman that worked the line at the Lakewood Atlanta plant. I had a lot of questions. He was a real sport about it.
