Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Preparing to pull the engine because the cam is wiped out. I’m bummed, the motor is original with only 76k miles. While the engine is out getting a rebuild, I’m going to attempt to rebuild the TH350 myself.

Welding on the sunroof hole patch. I have it mostly welded in now. This picture is a few days ago. I get tired of working overhead after a few hours and I do something else for a while but it's going well.

Got the ole guy out of its house for the first time in 6 weeks. Missed driving it. He even seemed happy to see the Yota. Cruised about town for a while today enjoying it and didn't even try and use the clutch. First time since the auto swap.

Good luck, here's a thread I read through back when I rebuilt mine. It won't completely lead you through the process but it has some good info.

https://nastyz28.com/threads/first-t...-wrong.325954/

I'd seriously consider NOT replacing the pump stator bearings unless they are seriously bad. I struggled to get the new ones reamed to size.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Sold out. I've overhauled the Q-Jet on my truck six or 7 times times by my count, going back to even before it was "our" truck, after FiL passed. At 218k miles, I guess it's just worn out. Bought an Edelbrock AVS2. I hope that carb works better than the adapter kit. The gasket for the adapter to the stock manifold, and the adapter holes didn't line up. A little reaming on the adapter to manifold holes, and punching the gasket mounting bolt holes bigger allowed for easy installation. Good thing I know how to machine things. Everything is hooked up except the throttle linkage and electric choke wires (just need to be plugged into the choke). I also had to buy a stud extractor to get one of the back studs out of the manifold. I had visions of a snapped stud, left-handed drill bits and easy-outs, and maybe even Heli-Coils, but the stud extractor really worked. Well, maybe the torch first, and then the thread penetrating fluid in it for a couple of days helped. I wasn't in any hurry. It's a 650 CFM, not some race carb. This truck pulls stumps, not ETs.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

.

Solved a mystery.

Cigarette lighter fuse would blow after plugging a usb brick into the dash lighter socket. It's been this way for years and I never really cared as there's a usb port on the radio. The solution was easy...

The unit installed turns out to be an early GM example or a generic one that is very similar. The socket has two parts: housing and socket. The socket part is the oddity IMO. The 12v positive end isn't just a point at the center of the back wall...it's the shape of a goal post...see arrow in image.

There's a 'goal post' tab on each side of the socket and they are both 12v hot. The plastic head on my usb brick male connector would push those little tabs out and into contact with the housing which caused a short to ground.

I took it apart and removed those tabs.

YMMV

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Doing a patina truck and finally finished the inside of my cab, 503 green. Single stage paint in gloss. Will need to knock down the shine on the dash so it doesn’t reflect in my eyes while driving, but turned out good. Paint, like everything else is just plain expensive.

Replaced 3 u-joints and the carrier bearing...after driving all over town because O'Rileys only carries one per store.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Today was the big day. My dad (who stayed over for several days because of thanksgiving) and I pulled the engine and transmission. No hiccups to speak of. It was fun, and I enjoyed being grateful that he could help. The engine will go to a machine shop, and I’m going to attempt my first Turbo 350 rebuild 😬.

Slowly working on the rebuild of my Turbo 350. Took the pan off and was pleasantly surprised the valve body was really clean looking. Hopefully the rest of the internals look like this.

Wife helped me pull the old hood off and attach the new one.
Can’t wait to get the bodywork and paint finished now.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

Added some CVF hinges to take out the hood corner from popping up. Hinges are legit and adjust was the only way to get my hood aligned almost perfectly. A lil more tweaking needed, but it’s 100% better than before. New interior kit order, bench seat, door panels, headliner and steering wheel 4-6wk lead time , can’t wait. Can’t figure out why my photos keep changing orientation…sorry.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter

I'm trying to trick my smart battery charger into being a dumb charger so I can charge my low battery and go get some baseboard at the hw store

Vector BC15BV is a pretty good charger, but it doesn't have an override(that I can find) for its polarity check, so won't put energy into a discharged battery, which tbh is mostly what I use a battery charger for

Plenty of dumb chargers on Marketplace, probably worth picking up a cheapie as a backup

Can you trick it with another good battery hooked up in parallel, hopefully to health battery can give the other enough juice to get the “smart” charger charging again.

If not, I got a dumb charger you can borrow. PM if you’re interested.
