MO 67-72 Chevy Truck Automatic Tilt Steering Column

Automatic tilt steering column to fit 67-72 Chevy pickups. This is a GM column. Column was originally in a RV & has had the changes done to it to bolt in & go. Column was stripped down & checked for worn or broken parts & replaced if needed. Column then was painted black & reassembled using the following new parts. Turn signal switch and wiring harness with correct curved electrical connector, neutral safety switch, shift indicator housing and lens, shift indicator pointer, lower bearing lower, bearing retainer, upper & lower rubber seals, lower seal retainer, column tube air seal, hazard lights warning knob, cancel cam / horn contact, turn signal & tilt lever, rechromed shift lever with new knob.

I've pulled 2 out of RV's. One was direct fit exactly like original tilt.Came out of a 1973 P30 The other one only difference is shifter lever at bottom end has an offset to connect to trans linkage . Came out of a much later RV.

No, original truck columns & rv columns are the same length. In the pictures the two are side by side.

I found out the hard way years ago when I installed a G Van tilt in my truck, 2 inches longer. To sit correctly they need 2 inches cut off from the cab end of the column, otherwise the steering wheel is real close to the driver. Not terrible, but not great. I am going to have mine shortened one day.

You can just shorten the intermediate shaft that goes to the steering box. Drill out the plastic in the shaft, slide it the 2” and put a bolt in it

Actually the original truck tilt column, the van tilt column, and the RV tilt all have same length main column tube. The van splined shaft is what is 2” longer. If the van column is bolted in the correct place on the truck it would be the same length on the inside of the cab as an original truck column.

As I've stated before. If you drill out the intermediate collapsible shaft and collapse it you have removed the safety feature that the collapsible shaft offers you. Correct way is to pull it apart. Shorten the collapsible shaft by 2 inches redrill and reinstall plastic shear pins.

Doing it that way is still a lot work & you still have to to address the neutral safety switch not being in the correct place on the tube & getting the upper, lower rubber seals & retainer on the main tube. I found it just as easy to disassemble the column, send the splined shaft to a machine shop where they cut it to the correct length & cut new splines on it. Now you can move the neutral safety switch location to the correct place & make the correct tab on the shift tube for the correct truck neutral safety switch. You can make the van column look identical to an original truck column.

Yes you are absolutely correct. The point I was trying to make is don't just collapse the intermediate shaft and think it's good. I've seen that done on way too many trucks.
Your columns are beautiful. The column's in both my truck's were done with shortened shafts. The guy who did them here in Edmonton years ago, hadn't done any in probably 15 years. He was tired of guys questioning his legitimate price.

I know exactly what the man who did your columns is talking about. The cost of a good usable column to rebuild & the cost of all the parts & paint, then the labor to make it look like new when you are finished.

I believe my buddy just converted/rebuilt a van one. 15 years since he did one, as he called me to measure the distance to move the neutral safety switch. I had supplied him with lots van cores years ago. Hanging in my shed are two van cores, and two RV columns one of with is an exact fit the other only lower transmission linkage arm different.

You very lucky to find a Rv column that will be just like a truck tilt, almost like winning the lottery. I have had at least over 300 Rv columns in the last 25 years & they all had the extra offset in the shift linkage arm & all had the wrong neutral safety location & the wrong neutral safety switch. A few I had didn’t have a shift linkage arm & neutral safety switch at all. Looked like a floor shift column & was 4” shorter. Those column’s had a Allison Transmission with a electronic shift pad.

The direct fit one came out of a P30 chassis that was built in my home province Alberta Canada In 1973. It had a good running 50Kmile 454. GM 454 emblems
Also had a 71-72 Chevy driver grade surround and insert grill lots of good seat belts probably lots of good other parts that wood go one C30 trucks. I had never before seen a 71-72 grill in a class A Motorhome. Fiberglass was custom fit to go all around the chevy grill. 1973 Haico Aquarius RV
