Re: My Own Vice Grip Garage - Getting the 250 i6 Running Again

New Inner mesh grill is on!

I wish I could say that was an easy job but it was more challenging than I expected. The holes on the grill didn’t all line up perfectly so I found myself doing a lot of fighting, pulling, pushing etc.

Eventually when you crank down on the hardware, it seems to come together as expected.

Ok, onto the next thing!

I got a new shed a few weeks ago, cleaned up the garage clutter which gave me space to get a full shot of how she sits now:

Thanks!

The air cleaner assembly was also whacky, seemed to be off center. So I ditched that one and got a mini from Autozone for $20.

Really? Even a Monojet needs some CFM. But if it works, it works.

Oh you think that will be a restriction on a low RPM 250?

I bought it because it’s all the parts store had.

Re: My Own Vice Grip Garage - Getting the 250 i6 Running Again

I have a 500 CFM Edelbrock 1404 on an Offy intake on my '68 L25 292. Bored at .030-over, that's 296 CI. I have a 12'' diameter, 3'' tall paper filter. I used to have a 14'' air cleaner, but when I bought a '71 GMC Jimmy with a 350 V8, it had the 12'' air cleaner. I thought the bigger filter should go on the bigger displacement engine, so I traded them out. All works good now.

Like I said, if it works, it works. If you're happy, that's what counts.

When that filter gains some dust, it's going to start choking the mixture to richer. That just means that you'll be changing filters more often. Run the truck with and without the filter. If you can't tell the difference, you're probably fine.

Yes, a larger diameter filter would be better. Gotta be something out there that would fit.

I see 210 and 250 a couple places. There's also a 160cfm, but I'd think that's for a 4 banger

Yeah, the Four Banger was the ''Iron Duke'' L4, 151 C.I. or 2.5L. Bombproof little engine. A buddy had one in an S/10 pickup. After about 500,000 he dropped in a younger one and kept going. Haven't seen him in 20 years but his old L4 Iron Duke is still on a stand in my backyard.

Getting back to Luke's need for a proper sized air cleaner, we should go with the largest size: 250 CFM.
So we need to find a formula to calculate what size air cleaner for that CFM.
Not a math whiz, so I'll defer to the Body.

Picked up a new hood ornament to replace the faded factory one that’s now 57yrs old… when did these things get so expensive, my goodness. I think this one was $80 shipped or so.

If anyone wants the original to restore, PM me.

Yeah, prices have gone nuts. Many are up twice as much as inflation since Covid.

I wish my income would increase that fast!

Mike it does seem that way…

They tell me that since the start of Covid, inflation is up 26%.

But I’m certain a lot of stuff I buy is up 100%, no question.

I had the fantasy idea of putting blue LEDs under one of those blue Bow Ties.
You can do it with current technology, but my Chevy's a '68 and my '71 is a GMC.

Yeah, things are getting pricy, Admittedly it was a Dodge, but I bought a '75 Coronet in '94 for $47. I've been looking for another "dumb" vehicle, meaning not having everything electronic, and I guess people have been watching Barret-Jackson too much.
