Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
Sweet .
I can't wait to get back in California so I can start on it .(next month ) . For now I'm in Wash State on vacation . Had ordered (and have ) the shifter (1981 version) on Ebay . One worry is if it will clear the bench seat ( of which I don't wanna get rid of ). The pics of that 79 truck looked like there was just enough room . |

This is where the shifter location moved in my 61 GMC Suburban; Previously it had the SM420.

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
65Robb,
There is a Board member named Brad54 who wrote an article how-to published in Custom Classic Trucks May 2009. That is exactly what I used and followed to put the transmission behind my GMC V6. *There used to be a link to Custom Classic trucks I've posted from time to time, but now Hot Rod magazine owns it, and is still archiving articles, so the link no longer works. Also if you find the old magazine be advised that the editing on the photos and captions are mixed up and may be confusing. There is a mention of using a thin metal spacer /shim, for the GM application to stop a leak at the countershaft bore. Here are photos of the magazine cover and article.

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
Also the seat you see in my suburban is a bench style seat that I moved back about 4" so don't use that for reference. The front seat bottoms on a Suburban are quite long so I'm not sure it would have worked, but you could always change out the shifter.

Well guess what ? THE TRANSMISSION ARRIVED TODAY ! OK it wasnt as clean as yours and I didnt just pop in at a wrecking yard , I had to order from Kentucky ! I live in Sunnyvale CA . Anyhow I am getting the nerve to do the dirty deed but ANOTHER question is can I re use my existing clutch or do I have to get an clutch cover ,pressure plate etc from an 1981 Chevy truck application ? WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO DO ? What about the cross member ? HOme made ? Teddy Dazzoman Last edited by Dazzoman; 09-09-2016 at 06:23 PM. Reason: not complete |

I bought the truck in 1980 ! but Im scared s--t less because I still don't know if you can fit an 1981 NPR-440 trans ( see pic ) into an 1966 292 six banger that was once an 1966 305E V-6 . I can't remember that far back as to what I had to change . But Im fretting about the throw out bearing , clutch cover , etc etc because it may not fit !!! |

Re: What can be said about the 4-speed New Process NV833 overdrive manual transmissio
65Robb-Congratulationson on finding a Complete unit with the shifter and rods; That’s the tough part.
Dazzoman- Look at the article I posted up from Classic Trucks on how to proceed. (it’s hard on the eyes I know, but I haven’t been able to scan proper copies) That was for a V8 but I think it would work for your 292 application. It’s what I read and followed to put the MY6 behind my stock GMC V6. My truck used the SM420. I had to use my stock bell housing because it’s GMC specific. I also had a new driveshaft made and the transmission cross member I fabricated up. I have the X frame so yours should be easier.

You said "MY6" , what is that ? I have just bought an NP440 transmission . Had to find ( what I hope is ) the linkage on Ebay for an 1981 Chev Van NP440 application ( acording to the seller ) . I hope I'm not off on what I got ... I'll take some pics of the trans but the shifter is boiling in an hot tank this weeknd , can't snap a pic . |

Any clues ? Cause Im not removing the seat, hump cover , etc and tearing into it until I know I have most of the parts w/me so it doesnt sit around looking like hell and forgetting half of what I did . Also too is no one mentioned the mecanical speedo fit . SO I need that and the cross member if which you ( or someone ) mentioned they found just bolted in ? Really ? I almost don't believe I will get away with that one . I still gotta see if the clutch throw out bearing , pilot , cover etc will even work from a 1966 to an 1981 tranny . Teddy |
