Under 40 g's isn't bad; try building a show piece in Canada, eh!?! I did a to factory+ '72 GMC and without any mech work I was in for 450 hours; it was awful nice when done though.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
I could easily have spent 60,000-80K if I bought things at retail and did a big crate motor, high end pulley setup, used NOS parts, and custom billet wheels...
That being said, as I mentioned, I've spent no where near 40,000 of my own money but gotten 40K retail worth of parts through trading/buying parts lots, and getting deals on new unused parts from abandoned builds.....

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
Well, got a nice aftermarket wiring harness and received my accuair stuff and final front end suspension items. Should have a chance after the first of the year to get back on this. Finishing up my brother in law's basement and busy with work right now....not to mention the holidays or that my wife has been in and out of the hospital and had surgery. She's doing well now. She took a nice chunk out of the budget right now for the truck but I'm just glad she's healthy.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
You know how much you have in that truck is kinda close to what i have in mine so far, i fiugure i have roughly another 17000 yet to finish mine, i know the pain, bu t i know the satisfaction, also, what is this copying me on the firewall, i guess a good idea has to be shared, but i think that there should be a payoff some how, which ever way you look at it, the truck is coming along. looking good!!!

Payoff? I am thinking about copying the angle detail too. You think we need to pay Kevin for this idea? Just messing with you. You have a very original firewall. I'm not sure many on here have the skills to pull that off (I know I don't). $17k hmmm? I guess if you look at how much a brand new truck costs maybe it's not as painful to spend $40k for a truck build. |

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
LMAO, hey now mine will eventuall be done on both sides, i hope this next winter to do that, so lets agree to disagree that i only need a half of a payoff instead, say a 68 camaro would go nicely for that idea. And for the next idea i need................. LOL just kiddin, i think no matter what any of us do it just helps the next guy to go that one step farther and really stretch out our skills and enjoy the satisfaction of sitting back and looking at what we ( as a group) have acheived on a whole. One by one our collective thoughts run togehter and we all become artists in one way or another. So a big CONGRATS to us all,
Wow that was kinda philosiphical of me, do not know where that came from, oh right about that payoff you two ......................

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
I actually have an idea to do what I think is an original design but I really don't think I have the metal skills to pull it off. I may try make a cad model of it and see if it will work. Anyone know if there is a blueprint somewhere of the cab on on our trucks?
Merry Christmas to all you guys with the angled firewalls and eveyone else too! It's a blizzard here! |

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
and VA72C10. Very glad to seet the progress you have been making. Your firewall is killer(no matter where you got the idea) he he. But like that you went and shaved yur drip rail. i think is is one of the things that really sets a truck apart from original. nice work.

I actually realized I underestimated that spreadsheet because of my custom stereo and interior I'm doing so it's going to be closer to 45K retail in parts when it's all said and done.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project
$45k retail.
So what kind of real out-of-pocket cash do you think you will have in it? I remember in the past, you were talking about selling this truck when it is done. I buy a lot of my parts at a discount or at cost,... but I don't keep track of MSRP of each item. Are you saying that your build would cost $45k+ for someone else to dupicate? I originally was planning to just put this together quickly, sell it, and buy a 2wd blazer project. But now I have so much time and effort into it (not to mention $$$) that I want to keep it and show it. However, how well my career is going will dictate whether I keep or have to sell it once it's done. I used to have actual out of pocket expenses at this moment to the penny but I lost the spreadsheet I had when my comp crashed....but from memory and recent purchases it is roughly 20K TO THIS POINT (including purchase price of truck). The way I have offset that is through local buying/selling of parts/trucks and selling some of those parts I found on here. I have done really well with that. Yes, 45K for parts plus 600hrs+/- labor to duplicate.....when completed
