Q for my steering colum shaft
hey guys i have a question about the shaft off the end of my tilt steering colum its one out of a 78 chevy van its tilt and I have the extension peice that i need to add to it to fit to my PS box. now what is the overall measurement that the shaft should be when its been pounded the 2 1/2" ????

I don't imagine anybody ever measures it, I know I haven't.
I just pound it shorter till it fits between the column and rag joint on the box. If it's a little too short, it will pull back out as you tighten the two nuts on the rag joint.

So it's too short right now to span from the column to the box?
Did you hammer it shorter yourself, or was it already that way?

its not to short i cannot pound it back its off my 3 in the tree column that connected to my manual steering box but the shaft will not budge

Drill out the two little plastic pins that hold the two parts of the shaft together. Look closely, they are there. Then, it will pound easily.

ok the pins i drilled out and now it wont again so im thinking its seized in there so i doused it with some WD40 and pounded it and still nothing

I think I'd try to heat it up a little if you have access to a torch, maybe that would get it moving??? Good luck.

All you need to do is use a BiggerFH. Actually mine wouldn't pound in either without damaging the column I did mine in my 12ton press. BTW the measurement you want is about 16". BBTW that part of the column is supposed to collaspe when your chest hits it from a collision.

thanx guys for all ur help i got it finally i found out that when i drilled the holes out i didnt go big enough so there was still some plastic plug pinching it
