transmission problem

This is the problem i have. I got 1985 chevrolet silverado. I installed a 700r4 transmission out of a 93 suburban. The problem i'm having is that i can't screw my speedo cable in anywhere. It look like a wire is suppose to go in the spot for the speedo cable. If anyone has had this problem can you please help.

Re: transmission problem

are you sure that it isn't the newer version of the 700r4?? i think its actually called a 4le something or other....can't remember right off hand what it is called...but if you look a little closer there should be some type of clamp holing the electric speedo sensor in where the housing for a speedo gear should be....one out of an older 700r4 might fit, but don't hold me on that...

Re: transmission problem

if the transmission is from a 93, its an electronically controlled tranny, called the 4L60E. There is no spot for the speedo cable. And unless you have the computer and stuff from the 93 also, the trans won't work. 700R4's were used up until 92.

Re: transmission problem

The 4L series trannies had electronic controls inside and out of the tranny. This includes the speedo output. There is a conversion tailpiece for these trannies that is sold by Street and Performance to allow the use of both the electronic and the manual speedo output. It is a little pricey. I am not sure if a conversion to an older tailshft is possible.

Is your electrical plug on the left or right side?

Re: transmission problem

At least you don't have a 4l60E, I would just take off the rear housing and pull the electric sensor gear off and put the old style gear on, hopefully there is a hole in the shaft for the retaining clip.
