Putting in a vortec
I have a 70 blazer and putting in a 98 350 Vortec with the fuel injec. system.
Has anyone have any tricks or info about the wiring and cpu. Im putting a 700r4 behind it whats the best way to hook-up the the lock-up to the CPu on the motor or is it better not to put them together. Thanks for the info. |

Re: Putting in a vortec
I am doing the same conversion myself, so I'll share what I know. You have a couple of options. I have heard of some people getting a factory service manual and cutting their own harness. Another option is to send your harness and have them cut it for you. A place called Fuel Injection Specialties does this kind of work for about $450 if I recall right. The other option is to have a place a like Howell-EFI build you one from scratch for about $500. One thing to consider is what your local laws require for what emissions equipment that you will need to retain as part of the conversion. This will determine what programs need to be deleted from the cpu when it is reprogrammed as well as what parts of the harness need to be left on. Both places can do the cpu work for $250 to $350 depending on what you need. As far as the transmission is concerned, my understanding is that the cpu is only able to run the 4L60-E that was stock with those engines. You may also wish to contact a place called BTB Products, since they do these conversions as well, but their price tag is a little more then the others that I listed. Each place has a website and were very good about answering questions when I called them. If there are other things I can answer, feel free to ask. I'll help if I can.

Re: Putting in a vortec
i am doing the same set up from a 98 vortec in a 70 blazer. what i have found on the Tran 460le if it came from a 2wheel drive u need to get a tail shaft that advance adapters sells with a 205 conversion for the transfer case. summit has the same tailshaft as advance adapters for less money!! as for the wire harness i haven't decide whether or not to try to rewire or spend the money for someone else to But for sure u need to have the computer re-flashed. hope that helped

Re: Putting in a vortec
Re-flash is just another way of saying to reprogram.
When I first started looking into doing this conversion, I called Street and Performance. My understanding is that most of their computer and harness work is farmed out to places like I mentioned do it for them and they mark it up.

Re: Putting in a vortec
Another thing, the 700R4 is longer than the stock tranny so if you have a 4wd you will need to locate the motor farther forward or move the t-case back resulting in needing new driveshafts or having the old ones lengthened/shortened.I'll just keep my good ol' carb'd small block chevy has used for decades and not have to do these mods, but that's just me.
