Re: Help! I can't remove the crankshaft balancer

I have a Snap On puller that is a universal puller . A 3 jaw puller wont do it . You need a puller that will bolt to the three holes that hold the pulley on . It should have a flat tip so that it doesnt dig into the threads for the harmonic balancer bolt . It will come off . They are just tight sometimes . Frank

Go buy a yourself a harmonic balancer puller. This tool makes the job soooo easy. On top of that it wont damage the balancer in any way that a regular pully puller could. While your at it buy a harmonic balancer installation tool too. This tool will get it back on the right way, without damaging thrust bearings. That stuffs important. Maybe you could rent this stuff from the local parts store and save some money... Just gotta ask.
Hey good luck with that thing, I hope it goes back in shinin. Why don't you paint your engine with the balancer installed? Most people do..

Borrow an installer and puller from the local parts store.

Re: Help! I can't remove the crankshaft balancer

I echo what Frank, Pushrod and G said.

You need something like this:

Auto chains stores like Autozone 'loans' them out. As Pushrod said, it beats the 3-jaw pullers that may damage the balancer by pulling them by the rim of the balancer. I definitely can relate to how difficult they can be to remove. The harmonic balancer remover made all the difference.

Re: Help! I can't remove the crankshaft balancer

andresco: If you tried with a 3 jaw puller I would seriously consider replacing the ballencer because the 3 jaw breaks the bond of the rubber material between the center piece and the ring. Just a thought, jim

The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.

Re: Help! I can't remove the crankshaft balancer

Once I had to use a propane torch to slowly heat up the back side center of the balancer on an Olds engine I was disassembling to get it off the crank. Had the puller on it and tightened it down as far as possible but it wouldn't budge so I proceeded to heat up the back side of it with the torch and kept reefing on the breaker bar at the same time and finally after about 40 minutes of this it finally broke loose.
Needless to say I pitched that balancer for a new one afterwards. Didn't want to take a chance with it.

Re: Help! I can't remove the crankshaft balancer

Be very careful with three arm pullers on the crank, if you don't have something to rotate against other than the threads in the end, you can seriously gall them up. You'd have to drill and tap the crank for a 454's balancer bolt to fix it. I broke a puller bolt off in my 80's head once, that was the suckiest experience ever when it comes to things that can go bad while working on an engine.

Re: Help! I can't remove the crankshaft balancer

IMHO, those standard puller types are junk. If you can borrow the type at the link below, you'll find a world of difference in how these go on and off...
