duel exhaust on a 250?

hey guys i read somewhere that for like one or 2 years in the late 70s you could order a truck with a 250 stright six with duel exhaust... ive always wondered if it was the truth or not but i bought my 79 late this summer and it has factory split maniflolds , like it would have a duel exhaust set up and its got exhaust hangers on the drivers and passengers side. so i was just wondering if enyone could shed some light on this for me i think it would be neat if it was factory

thanks guys
Josh

You got a pic of your "factory" split manifold. I'm curious what it looks like!!!

I don't know about factory but any competent exhaust shop should be able to run you some "splits" seeing that you already have the correct manifold.

Any chance of a close up of the 2 flanges on the manifold.

Re: duel exhaust on a 250?

That looks like an "Integrated Head" motor, the exhaust and intake manifold are cast as one piece with the head. I had one, ran duals with Thrush glasspaks, sounded like a Honda. LOL.

Re: duel exhaust on a 250?

I'm running Langdon's headers with 2 1/4 inch dual pipes and dynomax turbos on my 230.
Sounds like a small block at idle and while cruising.

Re: duel exhaust on a 250?

Dual exhaust were not available from the factory (for the straight 6)

- BUT -

In 1980, the exhaust went down the left side.

In 1979, the exhaust went down the right side.

- SO -

On my 80 stepside, I just bought a '79 exhaust system and hung it on the right side (had to rework it a bit where it circles under the drive shaft), hooked it up to that dual outlet exhaust manifold and

VIOLA

true duals on a straight 6!

It had a very distinctive sound to it....

Re: duel exhaust on a 250?

i once had a six in my '79 short box with dual 2" exhaust with 2 flowmasters. kind of a waiste considering it didnt really help out with performance being a stock 6 and all, it sounded cool though. people noticed the truck had duals and assumed it had a v8. it blew their minds when i popped the hood and people noticed it was a 6 cyl.
every 6 cylinder truck ive seen has that same manifold. its a 2 into 1 from the factory.

Big d.
How did the truck sound at idle with that setup? And when you got on the gas hard what did it sound like?

Re: duel exhaust on a 250?

Integral head motors often came with dual outlet exhaust manifolds. Unfortunately there is no 'factory' dual exhaust system for standard heads. The down sides of the integrals outweigh the split exhaust.

Amen to that! One had been installed in mine at some point, the 454 looks way better and talk about "split manifolds"..........LOL

Prior to yanking out the 6 me and a friend bent up some dual pipes with glasspacks, we ran the pipes out the back. The truck sounded like a Honda, not good.
