Painiting My LSx

I am building a 70 swb with a 5.3L/4L60E and I starting thinking about how I will detail the engine when the time comes. I was thinking about painting the long-block black, accessory brackets a nice aluminum metal flake, and the accessories black. What do you all think? Will paint adhere well to the aluminum heads? Hmm...

here's some pics of mine....I painted the block black, and painted the heads and valve covers aluminum, which I thought looked too fake so I wire wheeled the heads and valve covers again and clear coated everything...

Re: Painiting My LSx

I cleaned mine really good with a wire brush and lacquer thinner, then sprayed a coat of self etching primer on it, then painted it with orange Centari with hardner. Painted the acessory brackets black, I think it turned out nice, looks kinda old school, but new at the same time.

I painted the water pump seperate, then after the first couple of coats, I put it back on and painted everything together.

Re: Painiting My LSx

I painted the intake, oil pan, front cover, water pump, valve covers, throttle body maf, starter, pullies, alternator, and brackets all black. Coil packs hugger orange, to blend it into the truck a little more. also, coil brackets and fuel rail was painted metallic silver to give some contrast on top, I love the look of the aluminum block/heads so I cleaned them really well and they were left unpainted.

I am curious, what did every one use to clean the aluminum heads. I am in the process of painting as well but want to clean up my l92 heads and leave them natural. What does the best job?

Re: Painiting My LSx

I painted my block and heads in DupliColor Cast Coat Aluminum engine paint. Not sure yet what color to paint other stuff yet. I was gonna go a cast iron gray color on other stuff, and accent with black. I may just stick with this aluminum color and still accent with black.

Re: Painiting My LSx

Can't really see in most of my pics, by I "machine turned" the heads. IE the kind of finish you used to see on gauge clusters. I used a Green Roloc disc and did 1" half circles, overlapping 20% each pass.

Re: Painiting My LSx

I left mine as is...which was black and bare aluminum (except valve covers) out of the crate new. The efi intake was the 1st thing to come off. I don't even have any pics of it uploaded where it was as it came...with the intake still on.

What clear coat did you end up using? How is it holding up?
