Question Factory Rear Sway Bar

How does the factory rear bar mount? Is it bolted to the axle tubes and frame as i have seen on other vehicles? If I could get my hands on a factory bar how easy would it be to put it on my 87 R10? Any pics or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

The only "factory" rear sway bar came on 73-87 C30 dually pickups and on some 73-80 C30 single rear wheel trucks with the camper special package. No other 73-87 model was available with a rear sway bar from the the factory.

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

Thanks for the reply. If I found one would it just bolt on or would I have to fab brackets?

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

If you found one from a C30 you would need to replace your ubolts with the square style, opposite position of the round one and add the axle plates like a 1 ton has on the bottom of the axle. It would be much easier to install a new hellwig rear sway bar than try and install one from a c30...IMO.

I really wanted to do that to my C/20!
What all do I need?

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

Does sound like it would be less of a headache to just go aftermarket. From what I have read it also seems to be difficult to find a factory setup (kinda makes me want a factory bar more). Is there a company that sells the square u-bolts?

Find a c30 and take the rear sway bar, brackets that attach sway bar to ubolts and ubolt plates.

Anyone who builds springs makes ubolts. You can even buy them from napa.

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

A rear sway bar off of a c30 will not fit on a c10/20 because the spring pads are mounted closer together on a c30 than on a c10/20. You won't be able to adapt a c30 rear sway bar easy at all so it is best to go with an aftermarket.

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

Found a rear bar at pull-a-part yesterday evening. Got lucky someone had already taken the rearend and just left the sway bar hanging by the end links. Got the bar, u-bolt brackets, and round spacers that go between the u-bolt bracket and plate for 28 bucks. Didnt realize the springs were closer together on a C30. I guess I will have to knock the dust off of the old tape measure today and see if it will work on my truck. If not I made the trip worthwhile by grabbing a beefy 1.25'' front bar also!! Are the u-bolt plates the same on a C30 and C10?

Cool Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

I found this image online for the 1-ton trucks.
I believe that there are 2 different dually rear axle widths.
Ive wanted to do this to my C/20 and have seen a few trucks using this.

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

Can someone post a good image for the 10-bolt truck rear sway bar; Factory & aftermarket?

I will try and post pics as soon as I get new bushings and find some u-bolts and u-bolt plates.

Re: Factory Rear Sway Bar

I parted a 77 K10 and it had a rear sway bar, but it was missing the bracket to the axle.
It looked factory. Maybe it was retrofit years ago.

Are you showing that for reference? It looks to be the breakdown for a C/K 30 DRW assembly. AFAIK GM never offered a rear sway bar on a C10 truck.

It shows the R3, C3, & V3...denoting the 30 series applicaion.

Would the 3/4 C/20 Trucks use the same C/30 sway bar we all have shared above?

It would be cool if there was a GM drawing showing the 1/2 ton units.

This thread still needs to work towards showing what a 1/2 ton C/10 would get.

Yes, more than I expected. Mines a half ton with an aftermarket rear bar.
