Push Button Start - in factory igntion
If anyone is interested I found a great push button start system that fits in the factory ignition bezel.
and its a really simple install too. Just remove the factory ignition from the dash and break off the connector Then you just need to file down a ridge inside the housing so the start button plug will fit through it Then you just cut the plug off the factory wiring harness And from there you simply match the colored wires with the supplied harness - I found looping the wires through the ignition hole a lot easier for soldering (and make sure you have a high wattage iron - these wires are heavy gauge!) And then one wire to the brake switch The company that make these systems is Digital Guard Dawg and I have to give them a lot of credit for coming up with a button solution that worked so well in this truck. At first I was trying to find a solution that would fit in the 2" ignition hole in the dash (picture above) but they found a button (Lexus) that fit right into the factory bezel. You could use a little tape or adhesive but its pretty much just a nice snug press fit into the bezel and in my opinion it looks great! Here's their website if anyone is interested - just make sure you get the new Lexus slim button http://www.digitalguarddawg.com/2GOKEYLESS1.html |

I found the slim pack on the site for 70. Looks nifty, the rfid kits are kind of excessive but the plain start is pretty neat

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
Looks cool, but now all you have to do is push the button to start your truck? Or is there some other sort of safety feature that cuts off the power?

Then to stop the motor you have to put your foot on the brake and hold the button for a few seconds. It's also wired through the neutral safety switch - pretty much just 5 wires to install it and they even used GM color coding so you just match up the colors. It has all kinds of modes too - i haven't played with it but I believe you can have it leave the accessories on but lock the ignition (for car shows). It also has a manual mode where you have to push a lock/unlock button to 'activate' the system. Its well thought out but super simple |

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
Very nice. Though I imagine a relay could be hooked up so you don't have to worry about the heat issue, with all that power running through the button? Perhaps a future project

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
Well its a pretty neat set up. I don't have one of them there new fancy pants cars (lol) so I had no idea how those push buttons worked. Thanks for explaining it!

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
The security issue had me confused also. I've only seen these type of ignition start systems on commercials.

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
That is cool ! Thanks for sharing. I guess I would have to hack my 67 dash though since 67 has a one year only smaller ign bezel. RFID would be awesome.

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
Had one of those type systems in a Murano I used to have. Bought the car new and traded it after 11 months of pure pain and misery. One of the major problems we had with that keyless system is the jamming of or loss of the signals between the car and the RFID keyfob unit. More than once the car went into "shut down mode" while driving at highway speeds because of loss of signal between the RFID and the car. And this happened when both my wife and I were in the car with BOTH RFID keyfob units in the car with us.
Cool system in theory and looks great in your truck, but be careful in case you run into the same situation as I encountered. Al '69 GMC 2500 Custom Camper '69 Chevy C10 396BB LWB |

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
No worries about heat... the starter doesn't actually run through the button - the button just controls their 'box' that I assume has all the relays etc and handle the high current

Oh and they also include a manual override should you lose the fob - you get a pass code card and you use a button wired to the main control box to 'type' in your code to override the rfid (in case you lose it, battery dies etc). |

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
Was the lexus button the only one or size that worked with our key hole? I was actually thinking the S2000 button would look perfect on my dash.

Re: Push Button Start - in factory igntion
Being a quadriplegic working on my truck I've often wondered what I'm going to do about turning my ignition against popular belief being a quadriplegic doesn't mean I can't move my arms just that I don't have full function of my arms lack of triceps and no finger movement But this looks like the perfect solution to turning the key!!!
