"New" 1967 C-10 & Need Some Help!!
I just bought my 1st project this weekend and I am excited to get started. The truck runs and I can drive it down the street and back. It sounds good and looks like it's been hot-rodded alot. I was told it was a 350, but I'm wondering if it might be a 327 and I'm not sure what type of transmission is in it (it's an automatic).
I've noticed the power steering gear box is leaking pretty bad. It looks like it's a different steering column and from the pictures I've seen online, it looks like it's a later model steering column (68-72). I'll post some pictures of it and hopefully one of you can help me identify what gear box is actually on there and some instructions on how to replace it. Transmission pan gasket is leaking good too. Anyway to replace this without having to pull the transmission out? I've heard stories of people dropping the pan and ball bearings (??) go rolling out. Haven't worked on transmissions before and I don't want to screw it up worse than when I started. Also I've noticed when it's running for a few minutes, the upper hose on the radiator that is connected to the heater core starts leaking. The heater and blower motor are currently out of the truck. Is this a bad hose or is something not flowing correctly? It's going to take some time and $$, but it should be alot of fun. congrats on the new toy.the transmission pan is easy to fix. drain it first then remove all the bolts around it and remove. nothing else will fall out, take your old filter most likely held in place with 2 bolts out. take it to your auto parts store to match up with a new 1. Pick up pan gasket while there. Reinstall with new fluid and walla you just serviced your first transmission. On the heater hose you can use a piece of pipe and connect the 2 together. you will not have any heat but you don't now. so no harm no foul. enjoy the work and the new truck.

Are you sure it is your power steering box leaking or the hoses? If it is the hoses you can just replace them if it is the power steering box you can look for numbers on the box and cross referance it to a new one one classic performace products website....
Have fun also on the radiator hose just replace it.... It sounds as if it starts leaking when the motor warms up so it's got a crack in the hose and that would be a normal leak due to heat expands and cool contracts.... Have fun!!!! |

I decoded the VIN as well and it looks like it was originally a 6 cylinder truck - so I'm thinking the chance of it being a 350 is more likely than a 327. I guess I'll find out for sure once I get it pulled out of the truck. The block is black so it'd be tough trying to locate the block number with it still inside the truck.

the block number should be located right behind the rear of the driver side cylinder head right above where your transmission bolts to the motor. it is a raised number that is cast in to the block. youll probably have to clean the area well to read it. google gm engine block numbers and youll get some websites that have the numbers listed for dicplacement and year group. hope this helps. the previous owner told me mine had a 350 but it turned out to be a 307 i figured that out this way.

you can rebuild the power steering gear box if youre patient enough, i did one not long ago, look at rockauto.com its easy, but need to be careful and there are a few step by step write ups with a lot of pics

Yeah the CE begining the first two letters of the vin will designate a v8 model and a CS will designate it as being an orginial inline 6 motor. Also one thing I noticed in your pictures if you are planning on driving this baby very far please get some plug wire seperators or something to keep the plug wires from coming in contact with those headers! Also there is a pad on the front of the block I think it's on the right side where the head bolts to in front check there as my vin on my 350's are located on the left side of the block where the bell housing is from what I can remember! some 87-up blocks were stamped 5.0-5.7 on the right side of the block the 87 up are from what I can remember will have the one piece rear main seal.....Have fun!!

I also saw LMC's website and it looks like they have remanufactured ones for a few hundred $$. I might go that route but I'll check that website 1st, figure how much the cost of the replacement parts will be and decide if it'd be much cheaper rebuilding it myself versus buying a rebuilt one. |

Oh yeah forgot to mention if needed on the plug wires.... 267-400 SBC firing order is 18436572
Left/drivers side being 1357 Right/pasenger side being 2468 Shouldn't have to remove them to getem tied up outta the way but if ya do pm me or just ask I'm sure you will get help on this board as there is lots of info and people willing to help.... |

All of the other lights are working great (even the license plate light and high beams) but the brake lights aren't. I'll get those wires mounted away from the headers so I don't get stuck on my way to get it inspected! |

Got question for ya can you please take a picture of the tail gate on the angle? is there a step or no step? if it goes straight out then it's a true 67 orginial gate if not then it may be 68 or repop....just curious...

check the brake light switch under the brake pedel? and fuses/bulbs... should get the brakes up to snuff... I'm willing to toss ya all my spare parts that way ya can save. My truck is a frame off and most all parts are being bought new... I have no use for the old stuff... I just gave away my orginial 283 motor and 2 speed glide. I have plenty parts left to oust....let me know. Mine is a true 67 big window wood bed truck manufactured in St. Louis...

I was refering to the step right at the ending of the angle of the tail gate, so if you were to run you hands on the gate going toward either one of the tail lights outward is there a 1/4'' or 5/16'' step there? or is what I'm understading to be a myth.....I was told the true 67 tail gates dont have the recessed step in this area....

I would offer you my orginial tray but it is rusted out bad but heyyyyyy if ya want it you can have it. And I also have the orginial fender wells. Not sure here but I don't think the 67 yr model had power steering... That option came out in 68. Hence my old left fender well being butched for the power steering install by the p.o. also my left front outter fender bracket was notched for the power which I will be redoing....

Oh and my cab is a heat only cab which I don't know if there was factory ac in 67 on these trucks.... Never seen one with the factory ac on the 67 yr model... Mine is a short wheel base wood bed big back window also known as the panaramic option....

Oh and one more thing before it's my bed time please run the fuel hose behind the lower radiator hose as that fan would make me jump every time it spins... especially with that big seperation control debris device hooked up laying there..... Have fun and God Bless..
