Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
The ac controller has mounting brackets that get in the way also here is some tidbit of Info
Blazer and Jimmy Speakers One of the most unusual features of the 1967-1972 series of trucks is the unique placement of the 1969-1972 Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Jimmy radio speaker. Unlike the pickup, Suburban, and large trucks; the radio speaker is not under the top of the dash. In fact, the dash does not even have grille slots to allow sound to come from a speaker. Because of the Blazer and Jimmy's removable top, GM knew that some would occasionally be caught in the rain. This would quickly ruin a speaker that was in the traditional location. Thus, on the 1969-1972 Blazer and Jimmy only, the factory radio speaker is in the right side interior quarter upholstery panel behind the front seat. If the vehicle did not come with interior rear panels, the speaker was out of sight at the bottom edge of the dash.

Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
I have AC and the speaker bolted up under the dash but on the outside. I assume that is how it was supposed to install as I couldn't get it to work inbetween the dash and AC/heat control.

Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
I ordered mine with A/C and AM, and that's the way they mounted them in St. Louis. (where it was assembled) In the 72's anyway.

Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
Dmcinfo,
I bought it off the board. They come along once in a blue moon. As for sound, I couldn't tell you as it isn't working. I will probably have to send it for repair. I am almost positive the radio is good but I am loathe to get into it right now. Removing a radio in an ac truck is a pain so before I pull it out I am going to make sure that it is the speaker that isn't functioning. Probably a next winter project as I want to drive the Blazer now.

Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
My 72 CST Blazer with AM/FM radio had and still has (have not taken it out yet) the original speaker under the dash w/speaker holes in the dash. In the picture it is in the upper left corner, picture is from the glove box as I was pulling the A/C.
Looked but I don't have a pic of the top of the dash. |

Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
If the speaker was placed in the right side panel on trucks with side panels then the survivors with radios would have holes in them. I have a set of originals I bought from a board member and the right side doesn't have a speaker hole. I haven't seen a speaker installed in that way from the factory. I don't think that the blog post can be counted upon as reliable. It refers to the Blazer as having a 107" wheelbase when the diagram below shows the correct 104". Further, it appears that the brackets on the speaker shown have been bent to 90 degrees?

Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
Man that was quick
That nut shouldnt be welded on there, dont know what application it would be for..... Maybe dual speakers, across the lower dash

Re: Blazer Speaker mounting problems
I believe mine were threaded also (had nuts welded on them). I ground them off and redrilled so AC/heat control screws would go through. Any of the photos I found had it in the center, but perhaps the correct install is as 1949GMC pictures as the threaded nuts would be used. I am going to check my assembly and chassis manuals to see if I can come up with a GM picture.

Same place I have my stock speaker mounted. Those welded nuts would come in handy in this location as I believe there are only holes in the dash lip.
