Re: Steering wheel speed sensor????

Speed sensor just adjusts the steering box to be looser at low speeds or tighter at high speeds.

You need to look at your rag joint if its that bad.

Ask your wife if it feels as if the steering wheel has hit ice and seems to have lost control.

If the answer is yes then its the speed sensor on the steering column doing this and its a common fault on the trucks.

Re: Steering wheel speed sensor????

Most auto parts stores sell these. It's a very common replacement part. Less than $50 the last time I bought one. 30 minute job to replace.

Re: Steering wheel speed sensor????

Test it by disconnecting it for a while and see what happens. There will not be a SES or a code set for it.

would that not make the steering even looser and harder to control?

Re: Steering wheel speed sensor????

No. It will allow full power steering pressure to the steering box at all times. It will work like the 88-96 power steering system when the sensor is unplugged.

Re: Steering wheel speed sensor????

Mine has been unplugged since I bought it, drives fine, not loose at all.
The idea was to restrict fluid at speeds to prevent over-correcting and roll-over. If mine had been connected, I would have hit a truck that pulled out in front of me about a year ago. I missed him by inches at 80mph, did a few swerves and finally got the Tahoe stopped in the median. Got out, changed shorts and made the rest of the trip fine except for shaking like a bear cub crapping a pine cone for a couple of days.

Re: Steering wheel speed sensor????

Its under the dash. The connector is kind of a pain to get to. There is a 2 wire connector that comes out of the wiring for the multifunction switch. It plugs into that connector.

Re: Steering wheel speed sensor????

Or do it the easy way and unplug the connector on the power steering pump!
