There are some screw drivers like that I inheritated from my Grandpa. He was born in 1897 so they are probably from the early part of the last century.

After some more digging around the interweb I think you are correct. I also found out that they where a standard issue tool for the ww2 army jeeps and tanks, not this one though as it doesn't have a gov stock number stamped on it. I think I will give it to my dad for fathers day, I think this is something he will like!

I still have one like that and use it frequently. I got it from my uncle when I was 9 yrs old. Now 69 yrs old and it looked like that when I got it. With the metal the full length, it works got a pry bar, punch etc.

The best part? full steel shank unlike a lot of the garbage you commonly see today. I have one similar as well.
