Bleeding Power Steering w/Hydroboost???

Had to replace the PS pump and decided to just replace everything including the Hydroboost to gearbox line.

My Haynes and Chilton manuals dont even show my PS pump in the book.

Assuming all hydroboost systems use the PS pump with the remote reservoir?
Well, the book only shows the reservoir-on-pump models.

Is there a different bleeding method for the PS due to the Hydroboost?

Do I need to do the PS system AND the hydroboost since I also disconnected lines @ the HB??

Got it all finished up, filled it with fluid and fired it up to see if anything leaked or exploded... its getting kind of late and well... yeah.

SO... what next? Just turn the wheels lock to lock until it smooths out?

You need to bleed the hydro as well. Pull the return line where the hydro returns to the pump and stick it into a bucket. With the engine running, pump the brakes. You will see that every time you release the pedal you will get fluid out of the return line. Do that until each time it squirts you get a nice stream, then reinstall the return line. Now you can go ahead and bleed the steering box as normal.

I didn't have to bleed anything on mine...filled with fluid turn lock to lock, pump the brakes a few times and I was good to go...well I mean stop..

How important is having the wheels off the ground?

Last time I did a PS pump I wasnt able to lift the car and just did it with wheels on the ground, seemed to be just fine...

Admittedly just being lazy now, but how necessary is it?

That would be the rubber line between the HB & pump... Not the threaded line

So which end goes into the bucket? Pump side or HB side?

Correct, not the threaded lines. There is a small stub on the HB that a short piece of rubber line is connected to. Just run a longer piece from that to a bucket.

Okay.

So I took the rubber line from the HB (which goes to pump) and with one end in a bucket I pumped the brake until a steady stream came out upon releasing the pedal.

I reconnected it, topped off the reservoir and began turning the wheels lock to lock slowly.

Sounded pretty good, so I checked the level and went for a drive.




Stopping felt fine, though later in the trip I did notice the humming when applying the brakes and the steering was a little whiny BUT seemed to operate okay.

Was I supposed to plug the opening at the pump where that HB line went to? Was it sucking air when I was shooting into the bucket?

Or do I just need to keep turning the wheel back and forth?

Humming and whiny sounds like you may be a little low on fluid.

You did fine. Just make sure your reservoir is topped off and cycle the steering again a couple times.
