I need help with a steering gearbox rebuild

I need a rebuild kit for my steering gearbox and I've learned Amazon's car part finder is not trustworthy
so far I've bought
Edelmann 8522 which Amazon said was the right one for my 84 2wd and it wasn't, the first part I tried to put on was the wrong size, a piston seal
so i searched using the number on the casting 7802644 L and found the next one
Edelmann 7857 on Rock Auto and that kit is not right either. The bearings are way off.
The casting

Re: I need help with a steering gearbox rebuild

Went to oreillys and ordered the Precision 28401229 which oreillys said was the same as the GATES 350440 but the bearings aren’t the same, the original has a raised ring around one end. I’m going to measure all the parts when I get home
Is this ok Or do I have a bastard gearbox?

Re: I need help with a steering gearbox rebuild

Most folks just chunk out the cash and replace the box. I've done that in the past.

I'm glad to see someone pursuing a DIY rebuild. I hope you make it happen, and I further hope you document it to encourage others to do the same.

I've got a box that was left out in the weather with the lines off. I may pursue a teardown and rebuild of that at some point. If I do, I'd be thrilled to be able to follow someone else's experience, instead of attempting to blaze my own trail.

There’s only one reason I’m rebuilding it because it the original part and it’s made by Saginaw just like my M1 carbine, I’d like to think they were made in the same factory. I want everything in this resto to be done with my hands if possible

Re: I need help with a steering gearbox rebuild

Some of the earlier Unit Repair manuals have detailed service info on the steering boxes.
The parts books will have the parts information. Sounds like the Chinese kits are not quite right. I've run into this with carburetors. Had to buy three kits to get the parts needed.

RTFM... GM Parts Books, GM Schematics, GM service manuals, and GM training materials...Please include at least the year and model in your threads. It'll be easier to answer your questions.
And please let us know if and how your repairs were successful.

It’s an 84, the first kit had the right “size” bearings the second didn’t, this one is just like the first the OD and ID are right but there isnt a ridge around the end. Everything else is identical, is this an acceptable replacement? I know it could be installed but I’m worried it could “wander” around

After watching multiple videos on YouTube of people replacing the same bearing with the same no ridge bearing I started on it last night. Only one of those videos had the same as OEM replacement but he didn’t say where he got it
