1970 GMC Floor Mounted Gas Pedal replacement

I'm finishing up a sniper EFI conversion with a lokar throttle cable hook up. My pickup is a manual transmission with a original floor mounted gas pedal.

Do I have to replace this with a aftermarket floor mounted pedal or is it easier to install the firewall mounted one?

LOKAR has both floor mount as well as firewall. Anyone ever done this?

I hope this makes sense.

If your original pedal isn't all cracked and still pivots on the ball studs, I'd say go ahead and run that.

The original pedal is in good shape so I guess I could still use it. I’d have to figure out a way to attach the throttle cable to it.

The top of pedal itself presses against a rod that goes thru the firewall which attached to the original throttle cable.

Not sure how I could get the old pedal to push or pull against the new throttle cable.

I'm also looking at installing a newer pedal assembly in my 69 truck. I was in the bone yard last week and it is full of early seventies cars and trucks with gas pedals using a cable. I believe I'm going back this week and remove one from maybe a Cadillac, Buick, and/or Oldsmobile. They are all about the same, may need a little tweaking but should work with out to much of a hassle. I want the flexibility of the cable and like the fact that I don't have to cut the carpet below the pedal. Some of these cars have the pedals with aluminum trim, if so I may also get the brake pedal to match. The brake pedals are also bigger than the ones in our trucks, they may have to be altered to fit, but I believe they look better. Just something to think about.

Thanks Steve, the original pedal is in great shape. Definitely in the mix if the firewall mount goes south.

I love the idea of pulling a pedal out of something else and making it fit for your install. I installed trans am exhaust tips on the end of my trucks tail pipes. No one knows they match my trans am but me.

If I install the LOKAR pedal attached to the firewall, I will have hole in the caret.. which will get replaced anyways but maybe some nice mats will cover it in the mean time.

I also called LOAKR and they did say that the NEW gas pedal will sit closer to the firewall than the original floor mount pedal... I guess I will just have to get used to that.

I did this upgrade fairly recently. It took a little while to get used to the firewall mounted pedal instead of floor mounted, but I never looked back. It felt a lot more responsive and tactile. It's worth noting that my linkage was pretty worn out, which is why I did this upgrade. I would totally recommend it. There's a board member who makes the adapter plates and sells them so it just bolts right in. I'd say it took me... 2 hours? Including driving to the parts store. Make sure you get the right throttle cable/bracket/ball stud to mount it all.

Thanks for the feedback on the new pedal position.. sometimes I get tied up on something when it changes... but I'm sure I will love the new responsiveness compared to what was there.

Here is an update : I drilled out the two of the three original threaded holes like the loose instructions said too. Also drilled out the hole for the throttle cable just above the pedal location. Bolted everything up and connected the throttle body to the cable and pedal and so far so good. Here are some photos

I'm looking to do the same as 1BadTransAm using the Lokar pedal assembly, cable and cable bracket, along with their TH350 detent cable. But, man, is it an expensive solution at $508 total!

That thread is in a admin area and only those with admin rights can access it. I am assuming something was an issue and they sent a copy to the admin area. This is the thread in the common area,

Yes, that appears to be the listing for '70_402's parts. His last activity here was late August 2024, so he's still around. I just sent him a private message to confirm the part's availability. I assume the other listings are from ChiCom copycats.
