Van Neutral Safety Switch ?

Got a tilt steering column out of a gm van. Just Wondering what the correct neutral safety switch would be. The sliding tab seems too short to go in the slot in the column

The terminals for the wire connectors are different on the van than the trucks so you will have to use the one for the truck if you already have a NSS on your column.

Sounds like you are trying to use a truck neutral safety switch in the van column. The van neutral safety switch is made different & the part that moves the switch slides down in the rectangle hole. The truck neutral safety switch has a slot & it has a metal tab that is bent up on the shift tube that the slot on the neutral safety switch slides into. You will also need to move your neutral safety on the van column.

Sorry for the misinformation about the switches.

I guess you could use either one if you have to cut a new hole lower on the column. You would still have to change connectors if you use the van switch.

If your wire harness has the same electrical connector’s as the factory truck wire harness you can make the van neutral safety switch work without changing your connector’s. By the two connector’s for the Starter to engage ( yellow & purple wires on the factory harness ) there is a plastic tab sticking up by one of the connector’s, take a good pair of needle nose pliers & wiggle it back & forth to break it off. Next go the two connector’s at the bottom of the neutral safety switch, those are your backup lights wires, you want take your needle nose pliers & give both of the connector’s a little twist so they make a angle to fit the wire connector. Use your wire connector as as a guide to make your adjustment to the terminals on the neutral safety switch. You will also need to move your neutral switch down your column around 7” for the van column to work in your truck. ( see pictures ) The column on the left is a factory truck tilt column & the right is a van column.

I think the original screws have a built in washer on them.

Here are some measurements of the original screw style. It's a "B" type tapping sheet metal screw with a hex drive and a built-in washer.

Thread Diameter = .187" (#10)
Thread Pitch = 16 tpi
Thread Length = 5/16"
Hex Drive = 1/4"

You'll probably be able to find something like this at a hardware store:

#10 screw 5/16” long. Most #10 screws at the hardware store will have a 5/16” hex head on them, they will work as there is enough room for a socket or wrench. If you can’t get on short enough, take something like a cut off wheel on a dremel tool & cut it to length. 1/4” in length will work also, I would not go any longer than 5/16” as it would bottom out on the shift tube inside the column.

Motorhome column in old blue has no neutral switch.
Wire is jumpered.
Do those have a provision for the switch?

Most of the motorhome column’s had the van style neutral safety switch & they were in the same location as the van, towards the center of the column. If your column does not have the hole cut in the column for a switch then you have a column that did not have one on the column.
