Lifting engine

I need to change the Oil pan gasket on my 350, I everyone I've talked to said I'll need to lift the engine a few inches. So don't have a hoist, but I got a front end loader on my tractor, anyway where and how do I connect the chains to the motor? Thanks Yall!

Sometimes there are lifting rings mounted with the intake bolts. Or you could just put a bolt thru the end of the chain into the front of the heads.

Can you jack it up? Maybe try to drop the pan with the crank spun up in the front first?

Is this what you were talking about? there is one just like it on the opposite corner of the intake manifold.

I've thought about it, but it seems like it would be more stable pulling from the top, and also easier to keep there while I work.

Yes, that is the lifting eye. You can move the one from the back up to the front, across from the other if there is room. Then just disconnect the engine mounts and lift.

edit: just be carefull not to lift too far and break wires and stuff.

Is that so I wouldn't need to mess with the tranny xmember? Or do I need to undo the tranny mounts too? thanks for your help!

You shouldn't need to disconnect the tranny, unless the engine will not go high enough.

When I changed mine (IIRC), I just unbolted the motor mounts, used a floor jack to raise the engine up a couple of inches and then slid a 2x4 block in between the mounts and the motor. Worked well - just another way of doing it I guess.

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Did you have to mess with the rad hoses? I just changed my coolant and don't really feel like changin it again.

I don't think that I did (it was about 3 years ago). I didn't have a ton of room to work with, but enough to wiggle the pan off.

I had a friend jack up both the oil pan and transmission pan at the same time (with 2x4s between jack and pans) then slide pieces of 2x4 in motor mount spot . He had to loosen tranny mount bolts and of course motor mounts. Hoses won't be disturbed with the 2-3' inches of lift.

I think this is what the GM service manual recommends. And is how I've done these jobs.
