Disk brake shields question ?
Doing the front disk brakes on our 1971 C20, one of the tin shields is kind of mangled, are these really needed on there, can we safely run without or is there a downside ?

Re: Disk brake shields question ?
theres no real downside aside from maybe more brake dust going into you engine compartment.

Re: Disk brake shields question ?
Hey, I might be lazy, but I'm not that lazy ! Actually have a parts truck with 2 good ones on there but then I have drive 5 miles to get to it, then crawl thru the weeds, and jack it up. Then remove 8 rusty lugnuts, and some stuck caliper bolts, then I get to play with some greasy old wheel bearings just to get to it. I'm just not motivated to do that right now

Re: Disk brake shields question ?
Just a little something I learned when I was shopping around for a replacement for my truck: The aftermarket shields usually have a beveled outer edge, while the originals have a sharp edge as you can see in the pics. The aftermarkerts below are from Early Classic. They run about $22 each. Mine was not that banged up, so I chose to go with the the hammer and block method. Just my .02 cents. MisterE

Re: Disk brake shields question ?
Don't make this in to a RARE topic. I don't see how blocks of wood are rare, I can get them in aftermarket from many suppliers in my area. Now hammers those are hard to find and removable and reusable too.

And I apologize to Green Machine. You were asking a legitimate question, sometimes my (and others apparently ) love of sarcasm gets in the way! As others have said, while the shields are not absolutely necessary, they do serve a purpose.
