I would be skeptical of that plan because of the spline/spider gear issue you mention, and it would put your new c-clip groove in the old spline area of the axle wouldn't it? Probably a better idea just to transplant the whole 79 axle assembly (assuming the length and everything else is right, which I can't testify to.)

I will keep the stock housing n change the guts out with ECE products! they seem to understand our needs.

'63-'64 have 17 splines,65-66 have 30.
