That stinks about the mufflers. But I'd invest in some fully welded ones any how. They tend to live longer in our area. Your area is probably more friendly than ours, IDK. The clutch deal sounds real odd. But maybe it had been hurt before and you didn't notice it and it just slowly had been getting worse?

Here is my '70 K10 the day I made the deal on it.
On the outside it still looks the same, since all of my work has been getting rid of all the Mickey Mouse stuff that has been done to it over the years.
It's a solid truck, this last weekend was the first time it really bit me in the behind.

I have Flo Master 70's in my burb, and I am happy with them for the most part. I will decide what to do when the truck is back at the muffler shop, and I have a discussion with the shop owner to see if I can afford to go that route.

My feeling is, is that I am gonna have to eat the cost on the mufflers and labor since it wasn't the muffler shop that caused any of this.

I feel your pain, and I also think it's weird that all of a sudden it just started to back fire with this new exhaust. Either the restriction from the new exhaust is high, or the muffler crimps were done on a Monday. How rotted was your previous system?

Previous system was headers, and a pair of Dynomax turbo mufflers.
The mufflers were fine, but one was showing a little black smoke stain on one of the crimps.
I did the exhaust system mainly to get rid of the old headers, and to make it nice and quiet while running the OE ram manifolds.

Since you changed from headers to manifolds I would check your plug wires to make sure you have your firing order right...if not it could very well cause a backfire.

Why do the splines in the hub in the last pic look like they are worn and wallored out?

I saw that too in the photo and had to go look for myself, and it's just junk left from my greasy hands. There is no damage or excessive wear to the input shaft on the trans, and the clutch disc fits like it should on the input shaft so there is no play.

Hmm, there are no real obvious failure signs. It could just be a cheap china pressure plate with weak springs.

This might be a dumb question but what does the throwout bearing look like? That seems to be the only thing we can't see in the pictures. Oh, and the fork for the throwout bearing. Maybe the bearing took a dump or broke the fingers off the fork? Good luck!

Update:

Trouble with the clutch seems to be the linkage as the problem.
Found the engine ball stud broke, and the piece that is in contact with the clutch fork cracked in half. All this threw it all out of adjustment, and at the same time visually looked good while in the truck.

I wanted to replace the clutch anyways, since the one in it was super heavy (which I think may have caused to the failure of linkage parts).

Fixed the leak the input shaft was having, so new seal and new gasket to fix that.

Found that the timing was way advanced, and the initial timing was at 5*

My buddy had to close his shop, so we had to rush to get the truck going to get it to the muffler shop. Times have been tough on him, and business was not enough to keep the doors open. I always tried to throw a bone his way, and we had already planned to drop the transmission and transfer case to swap the clutch. But the competition in the business park he was in was tough, and he decided to just close down and re open another day.

Spoke with a shop in town that I found that specializes in high performance engines, and his shop was full of Chevelle's, vette's, elCamino's, and some other off road stuff. I told him the story, and he is certain that I have the air gap wrong on the Pertronix... I plan to take it to him to see if he can prove his point, but his waiting list is quite long so it will be a couple weeks.

I have the truck back from the muffler shop, and decided to have Flowmaster 50 series delta flow's installed. Truck sounds great, and it does run a bit better after the timing has been adjusted but not there yet.

Yea Wes, sometimes when I have excess gas, a backfire makes me run better too.
