cant catch a break!!
So I still have the knocking sound in my 5.3. The seller won't answer my calls and hangs up when I call from a different number. Today was the second time I took the truck out for a drive to see if it helps the lifters. Once I got back I left it out there for about an hour and went back out to move it. It started with no problems but when I put in gear it stumbles and shuts off. Any ideas? Could it actually be my torque converter or flex plate and that could be the knocking sound?
Here is an updated video with the exhaust hooked up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb3B...e_gdata_player Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: cant catch a break!!
Well if the seller made some sort of warranty, I'd show up at his house and "persuade" him again...but if its some joe off craigslist, not much you can do.
If you have access to someone with an advanced scanner (not just a code reader) you can monitor knock and see if its actually "knock" or a "tick" from the valvetrain or elsewhere. It almost sounds like the cold-start piston slap that the early 5.3's were known for, but that usually went away after a few minutes.

Re: cant catch a break!!
It was from cragslist and he has several listing. The knocking wouldn't go away, the truck would shake whenever I would stop and going uphill.,

Re: cant catch a break!!
The first thing I would do is pull the rocker covers and see how it all looks.
They're pretty easy to get once the coil packs are removed. Kim |

Re: cant catch a break!!
Do you have any idea of the mileage on the motor when you got it? From the video (and my laptop speakers) I initially think it's the torque converter/flexplate. But stumbling and dying when you put it in gear isn't a flexplate problem, it would keep running. That's either the torque converter or something on the input area of the trans OR its an unrelated problem that doesn't have anything to do with that ticking. Just trying to think out loud...

Re: cant catch a break!!
That sounds like a rocker hitting the valve cover or a torque convertor bolt hitting something underneath. It doesn't sound like a lobe/lobes gone flat that sounds different, this is more tinny.

Re: cant catch a break!!
It sounds like it's in the valve train, pop the valve covers off and take a look, check all the pushrods and rockers and go from there.

Re: cant catch a break!!
It has 90k, I pulled the the covers a couple of days ago. Made sure the rods were straight and not clogged, rockers look good as well. I can also hear/feel the knocking close to the transmission. I'm guessing the gears are jamming up and causing the truck to shut off.

Re: cant catch a break!!
Do you have all the wiring hooked up right for the torque converter lockup and unlock. You should have the correct brake pedal switch that has a wire for the torque converter unlock. When brake applied, torque converter unlocks. I would check that if its only doing it when idling and stopped. Just listened to video. That does sound like something in the engine though.

Re: cant catch a break!!
I recently had an issue with a buy off craigslist where the guy was completely ignoring me. I emailed him his home address (he didnt know I had it because we met somewhere else). He responded right away and made good on a return. Sometimes you have to be an asshole. Or small claims court!

Re: cant catch a break!!
Unfortunately, I don't think any warranty is implied or inferred off of a craigslist purchase. It's buyer beware and pretty much any court would see it that way UNLESS there was something in writing. As far as the drivetrain problem eagleuh1 might be on to something. When we run cars on the dyno with a lock-up converter switch on the dash, if it gets left on when the dyno brake is turned on, it will pull the vehicle down and kill it, that goes for 800 ft*lb diesels as well. I know you said it drove fine for a time, maybe a wire came loose or is shorted out etc keeping the converter locked???

Re: cant catch a break!!
So I checked all my connections and the wires from one of the clips to the injectors came off. Put them back and I was able to drive it but it still stumbles when a gear kicks in. Took it to a tranny shop and he said it does sound like my converter but can't really look into it until Wednesday. on my way back I lost my gears I had to slow down to 15mph so first could kick in. If I gave it gas I would loose it, so it should be the converter??

Re: cant catch a break!!
This is a little more worst case scenario but you could have splines broken off of one of the internal gears of shafts on the tranny. Kinda like someone liked to do reverse and nuetral drops and ate the teeth off. Thats assuming that you can kinda "Feel" all this in the car when your driving.
You got metal in the trans pan? Does it still make the same noise in nuetral as it does in park etc? Each gear always the same noise?

Re: cant catch a break!!
Which trans are you using? Sure the tourqe converter is not pushed through the pump from not being all the way in while being installed?

Re: cant catch a break!!
Here is another video. The sound changes when I put in R and D. I was able to check the bolts on the TC and they are good.

Did you smack the flexplate and see if it rang? Jay
