Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
Hello all.
I've been having some trouble identifying the power steering gear box that's on my 1963 c20, originally 292 i6. The pump itself has the signature "S" indicating that it is a saginaw box, and there is a tag on the bottom that I believe reads "73-68." Every thread referenced in the FAQ's shows a similar looking pump, but the pitman arm is flipped on the pump that was put in my truck at some point. Power steering gear box commonly found in Faq section: Power steering gear on my truck: Google and searching has led me in circles so far so if anyone could shed some light that would be greatly appreciated. |

Wow. I have to noodle that around a bit. Never seen anyone have a pitman arm located like that.

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
I havent been able to find anything about the pump itself. The whole steering geometry is different than what i usually see (I'll post more pics later on.) The strangest thing is that the tag number brings up a completely different pump!

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
That is the steering BOX not a PUMP. The pump mounts to the engine.
IMO that all needs to be torn off of there and the correct power steering box mounted properly with the correct steering box adapter plate.

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
I can see where I have mixed up some of the wording in the original post. My question is still in regards to identifying the Saginaw steering box on the truck, not if I should replace it (I think that's a given at this point lol)! It's a situation of what the heck was put on this truck in the first place in case anyone runs into the same situation. It might not happen often but maybe 1 in a 1m.

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
I'd really put on normal c10/20 steering equipment, keep you're gear box, use this adapter plate and be done with it: http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=332923

Why would I reuse the gear box? I can't even figure out what its from. The question remains. Does anyone know or have information on THIS gearbox. |

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
Great advice. I guess its easier to push people to site vendors than to answer questions honestly and straight forward.

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
a. they are not a site vendor.
b. it's a strange box. c. even you said you cannot figure it out. d. the suggestion was to buy a correct box, use the correct mounting plate and that is sound advice. The answers you get may not be what you want to hear and I have no response to that. We here on this forum are here to help "if we can".

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
Throw it away and buy something else doesn't answer the question. It's not even helpful when the question is "what is this?" Not "how can I fix this?" That's all I'm saying.

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
There should be some more casting numbers. You may have to remove it and wire wheel it.

Re: Saginaw p/s steering gear identification.
Thank you raylube. Judging by the notes section I think this may be a really good lead as to identifying this part. It mentions ford units having a tag, which is present on the bottom of this gear box. All I have to do is get home and clean up the box. I'll see if there's any more numbers on it somewhere and post back.
