Oddball VIN --just noticed

Had my 68 GMC for 20 years and never noticed or compared the vin to the title. Yeah I know--weird by itself. So being a GMC the vin is a little bit different but..... CE 2590 DZB followed by the 5 numbers comes out to 14 digits. Now the pillar plate has CE 2 0D - ZB 5 numbers equals 12 digits minus the hyphen. The oddball 59 on the title is 1967 only designating a 127'' wheel base.

Any clues?

Don't know if I'm answering your question, but I had a VIN issue with a Roadside Rescue guy, who gave me a battery jump on Monday night last week.

I have a '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500. My [partial] VIN is KE114S-134xxx. I showed the guy my Registration with the VIN, and he said OK, then tried to plug in my 13 digit number [incl ''-'']. His computer system wanted more numbers. I said the Dash should count as a digit, since it represents where an extra code letter/number would go if I had specific equipment relavent in the State of Pennsylvania. Being in AZ [and originally sold in CA] my Jimmy has no PA related equipment. Whatever that was?
Arizona ADOT/MVD does not include the Dash on the registration slip.
He called me again before I'd gotten two blocks away. Saying he needed to see my VIN again. I pulled over. This time he took a phone snapshot of the Actual VIN plate. The system still kicked it back.
They told him it MUST be 17 digits long.
[Plant is ''S'' St Louis, MO -- where all K/5s, Blazers and Jimmys were made. Until MY '72, When Flint, MI [''F''] added K/5 and K/1500s to the production line.]

OK, so he figured to add five more Zeros to the front of the sequence, and it worked.

I know the GMCs were odd through these years, but having that extra in there with the 67 long wheel base designation and taking it out to 14 digits is throwing me. These early cars and trucks only used 13 digits.

That's a good trick, I will have to remember that one. Easier than trying to explain pre-1981 VINs

Never heard of Roadside Rescue, but I'd expect a legit organization to be knowledgeable about different serial numbers and the length thereof. Then again, it took a few tries with our insurance company to get the mileage per year request straightened out. Our '70 Truck is missing an odometer digit, compared to newer vehicles. Driving it less than 1k miles per year didn't help them at all, either.

Makes sense to me. I also have a vintage Arizona 1969-72 lemon yellow YOM plate. [With June 1971 reflective tag] And the black letters are fading.
Not the normal everyday license plate.
He probably had prove to his system, I wasn't a ghost.

VINs prior to 72 were 13 digits on our trucks. Starting in 72 they were 14 digits. I forget what the special stuff was needed for PA sales, but most vehicles I have had it is just a dash for the none PA sold vehicles. I believe it was 1981 when the feds ordered everyone to go to 17 digit VINs. Lot of the computer systems (DMV or VIN search) will not permit a VIN shorter than 17. Most do Like PA and add zeros to the beginning. Some states I have heard actual make you a new VIN to get it in the system

You Vin should be the one on the door. The other is the model ID#, which will always be different than the VIN.

The issue is that the ladies (and gentlemen) at the DMV are not experts on our trucks, or vintage vehicles in general, and transcription errors get made.

The VIN on the truck is correct, regardless of if it matches a modern format or not. If the title does not match then the title is in error.

That's being overly generous!!!!! My interaction with most clerks at the CA DMV offices was a joke. I was in there, on duty, and had an argument with one
of them. They absolutely do not know what the vehicle code book says. It seems it doesn't matter. As far as VINs go, they should all know what year all vehicles went to the standard 17 digit VIN. That's basic info for any DMV clerk in any part of the country.

Anyway, sorry to thread jack. If the truck has a short VIN, it should not matter. That is the number that should be on the title, period. No zeros or Os, or dashes. The # on the VIN plate is all that needs to title.
