They don't make 3/4 ton and one tons for nothing. You use the right tool for the job....

Re: Why is my truck such a *****

Concepts of a 1/2 ton changed in the last 15-20 years. Back then a 1/2 ton was a 1/2 ton.

Today you can get a 1/2 ton to almost tow as much as a old school Crew cab dually.

Re: Why is my truck such a *****

It is a safety issue. It can pull the weight, but can it stop it?

Re: Why is my truck such a *****

If an alternator and starter were all you put into your C10 you are doing very well. Prices for rebuilds or even new AC Delco on those parts are cheap. A 1/2 ton can haul a lot if it is geared properly, but as has been said, stopping and handling with the relatively lightweight suspension and frame are an issue.

In my mind, a 1/2 ton is built more like a car, and a 3/4 ton is heavier all the way around - from the front suspension to the rear axle. I think it actually weighs about 1000 lbs. more empty with all that gear on it. Of course, 3/4 ton gas mileage is terrible compared to a 1/2 ton.

We'll I wouldn't want a 3/4 ton I would want a 1 ton at least what the hell can a 1 ton do other then waste more gas to load albertsons groceries!

The weight I would see a decent truck to pull is 6500 pounds to 8000 I plan to have a reliable truck that can haul jetskis and crap around.ahell the newer v6 Chevy models pull more weight this is a joke!

Ive had to edit several posts in this thread due to non family suitable language. This is amazing because it is a pretty easy topic to discuss without using stuff that is not family friendly. If I have to edit this one more time it will be closed

How many jetskis are you towing? They weigh around 800 per ski and can be towed by a C10 or a car for that matter.

Re: Why is my truck such a pain

For a reference, I had a 2004 GMC Sierra, long bed, regular cab, 4x4 with 5.3 V8 and 4L60E automatic transmission. Great truck. I loved it for 7 years, maintaining to perfection, but using it as well. 180K miles, towing, plowing snow and commuting.

The only thing it could not do well was tow. It was rated for 8900lbs, but my 5000lb trailer loads would make the chassis flex, rear suspension squat and generally wallow in turns. It had plenty of power, and adequate braking, but the chassis was not enough. I tried a few upgrades with some positive results, but it never felt right. Upgraded to the 2500HD in 2012, and its a world of difference. Its also almost 2500lbs heavier! And gas mileage is terrible. But towing is easy-peasy!

The lesson is tow/load within the legal ability of the truck and to where you feel comfortable.

Does anyone have any information on a 1 ton because I plan to buy a 1 ton I would want to buy a boat and hopefully a 1 ton can pull about 6500 pounds and maybe 2 jet skis 800 pounds a piece. These trucks are fantastic at carrying quads I can literally fit 4 atvs in new trucks that's impossible.

My C20 with the camper special package was rated at 9000 or 10,000 pounds. A regular C20 was either 8000 or 9000, a crew cab dually can do 11,000, and a C30 rclb is 10,000 pounds. Provided your running E rated tires. I have had 2800 pounds of scrap in the back of my C20, and it actually rode nice. Barely dropping the rear end an inch.

If you plan to lower your truck just use C30 parts.

Re: Why is my truck such a pain

It like a have my cake and eat it too thing not usually gonna happen. What kind of boat? it should have no problem towing a normal boat and jet ski, i tow with my 85 k10 alot and it does fine. As for replacing alternators and starters that's nothing compared to a new truck payment that will also break down sometime or another. I am way ahead from driving older stuff vs car lot new i haven't had a truck payment in years and my trucks don't require that much $$ to upkeep.

Re: Why is my truck such a pain

You might want to fix your truck before you start a thread about the lack of towing capabilities of ALL square-bodies.

Here is mine working, no problems at all towing or braking. It was a lot less then buying a brand new 2014 Dually.
