Mine definitely had the cartridge filter canister - and the adapter put on was for the Ford style filters I found out (after buying a filter the first time for a GM)

My father-in-law bought a '68 Impala SS with a 307 engine.. I did the maintenance and repairs on it for years, well into the '80s.. I never had need to go inside the engine but it had a cartridge type oil filter.. I later installed one of those adaptors that used a Ford filter...
