The OP is going for a Cammed 5.3, A 4L60E will feel Better/Faster at Part Throttle where MOST driving is done. Especially if the cam is too big (Easy to over-cam a 4.8L/5.3L) If I slapped a Allison 1000 in your truck....You would notice it |

I only asked because I dont currently have a transmission for this build. I`m getting a 5.3 core long block from a friend for free. I`m not planning to reuse my 1985 700R4 as its currently on it`s way out anyway. The cam I`m planning to run is 218/226@.050 .595/.580 113LSA from Tick Performance. He recommended a 2800-3000 stall with 3.73 rear gears. Like i said, I dont care which one I use but I happened to find a 4L80E core for $150. 4L60E cores are going for much more than that in my area.

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
and I only run 80's. yes I have built monster 65 and 70's. but in the end a mild 80 will take it all day long. most times for less money. I don't care about parasitic loss I drive a 1ton truck. I care about reliability and cost.

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
I did a 4l80 with a 5.3 in a 83 c1 and for what I was trying to do it was the Dumbest thing I've ever done. I was being cheap I had a extra 80e laying around and hindsight I would of found a cheap 60e and put it in. The tune has to be for a 4l80 or it will not work. Trust me! Google segment swap and Ull see what I'm talking about.

Now if you already had a computer and wiring setup for a 4l60e and just tried to toss a 80e in there on a wing and a prayer....well...thats not the transmissions fault.

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
Have any of you guys used the TCI controller for the 4L80E yet? I was at a local trans shop today asking if they had any 4L80E cores and they said they just installed a 80e in a 69 Camaro and used the TCI controller and it worked out awesome. They said they can't keep 80e's in stock because they have a problem breaking cases at a certain power level? Have you guys heard this before?

4L80E cases are not prone to break, I have several out there with 700-1000 horsepower being put through them with no issues. They have the thickest most robust case of all Hydramatics. Bellhousings breaking is usually from the trans being in a bind (Prying it over to get aligned with a mount, Bad U-joint, Out of balance drive shaft...ETC. Big power cars with violent wheel hop or Tire shake can do that....Not really the fault of the Case though. The Lugs around the Intermediate Clutches can crack/break, Builder error....Do not block the 1-2 Accumulator! I guessing they are talking about the Bellhousing? If the Case wall (Arrow) is busting.....That is run away Line Pressure issues (400+ PSI) |

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
They said the cases are cracking along the casting seam on the top of the case. I got on to this subject with them because I asked if they had any 4L80e cores to sell. He told me they can't get enough to use to build and sell, let a lone to resell. That's all I really got from him and why I asked here.

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
I have a hard time keeping cores also, Just not for his reason.
I would hit some wreaking yards. LSx/Duramax cores run $250-$300 SBC/BBC/6.5L cores run $150-$200 This is regional, So they may vary where you are? |

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
I've only found 2 late ones around here for $500ea. I don't really want to spend that much on one since it's going to be rebuilt later.

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
Okay, I just bought me an 4L80e for my LM7 5.3. Is this the flexplate and spacer I need to make it work?

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
I just search craigslist for diesel transmission. Picked up a 80e for $75 last year. You can get a stock converter for a fair price as the diesel converter I usually have a very low stall speed compared to a gas converter.

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/pts/5304560682.html Did they really do 4.8/4L80E in the Tahoe XL? I'd like to do a swap on my C20 and keep it capable as a 3/4 ton truck, I figure the 4.8 should probably make enough power for me (and if it doesn't I'll throw a turbo on).

Re: 4L80E behind a 5.3
So if it's out of a Yukon XL it's a 6.0? 2003 means LQ4 I believe, if that's what it was. What's the easy way for me to tell displacement?
